Samsung Electronics and SHARPS accepts settlement plan

November 30, 2018

On November 23, 2018, Samsung Electronics officially accepted a settlement plan recommended by the Mediation Committee, a third party committee formed to oversee the mediation process aimed to resolve the employee health issues surrounding Samsung’s semiconductor production lines.

Samsung has fully accepted the Committee's terms, whereby Samsung will compensate its current and former affected workers in accordance with the guidelines, make a public apology, and contribute 50 billion KRW towards research to improve the health of workers in the electronics industry.

At a press conference, Samsung expressed a sincere apology to the aggrieved employees and families, stating that its offers to date fell short of being thoughtful or swift, and that its management of the health of employees in their working environment has not been perfect.

In accordance with the Committee’s compensation guidelines and details to be set forth and operated by a third-party compensation committee, Samsung will ensure that the compensation process starts within this year and continue until 2028.

Current and former employees and on-site partners who have worked at Samsung’s semiconductor or LCD manufacturing facilities for more than a year since 1984 will be eligible to apply for compensation under the Committee’s plans.

While the causal relationship between the workplace environment and the contracted illnesses is very difficult to establish, Samsung voluntarily, without the requirement of any legal or court-ordered mandate, agreed to compensate the affected employees without disputing the issue.

Samsung has been providing financial support for medical expenses to its employees and will continue doing so, apart from the aforesaid compensation plan.

Samsung promises to place greater emphasis on providing a much safer and healthier workplace.
