Samsung has continuously found a new breakthrough ways to perfect the balance of speed and efficiency. Samsung Exynos processor was the first in the industry to feature the octa-core CPU, big.LITTLE HMP processing, and 64-bit computing in mobile. While the industry struggles to go forward, Samsung redesigned the CPU from scratch to provide a differentiated value. The custom-designed CPU is the innovative outcome of Samsung’s continuous work done to improve mobile processor.

Direction of redesign

Redesign from scratch for
speed and efficiency
Samsung licensed ARMv8 ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) from ARM Ltd. and designed the micro-architecture including branch prediction unit, fetch, decode, dispatch and execution units to make the best mobile CPU core to date. In addition to performance, the custom core’s power efficiency was enhanced by adopting advanced low power microarchitecture design. Power dissipation is drastically reduced through aggressive clock gating design. And the CPU design is optimized to minimize unnecessary switching and data transfer.

Faster yet
more efficient brain
Through a completely clean sheet design, a 1st generation custom CPU core in the Exynos 8 Octa (8890) offers 50% higher single-thread performance, 30% multi-thread performance while consuming 40% less power when compared to its predecessor, the Exynos 7 Octa (7420).1 And the Exynos 9820 features a 4th generation custom CPU upgraded with wider pipelines and optimized cache memory. The Exynos 9820 offers higher single-core and multi-core performance of up to 20 percent and 15 percent respectively when compared to the Exynos 9810 processor with a 3rd generation custom CPU.2

Heterogeneous computing
for faster processing
To continuously utilize the benefit of big.LITTLE processing, Samsung implemented its own SCI(Samsung Cache-coherent Interconnect) to enable HMP(Heterogeneous Multi-Processing) among eight CPU cores including custom CPU cores. Furthermore, the latest Exynos processor features upgraded SCI that supports heterogeneous computing that utilizes CPU and GPU together for faster computing.

Turbo mode

Janus Engine,
the core boosting technology
Samsung developed the Janus Engine technology for the new CPU core, offering the highest performance for specific use cases that require peak performance using single or dual cores. Janus Engine enables CPU cores to run at higher clock frequency, up to 20%, on a single or dual CPU cores within the same power envelope of four core operation. Janus Engine will provide better user experience with improved responsiveness when browsing the web or launching applications whilst keeping the overall power consumption low.
