Before you begin

  • Download the Smart Switch app on both your old and new devices (where applicable), and check that your app has been updated to the latest version.
  • Ensure that the batteries on both devices are fully charged.

Launch Smart Switch on both your old device and your new Galaxy smartphone

Go to "Settings" > "Cloud and Accounts" > "Smart Switch" and select "USB Cable"*.

*For Galaxy devices on Android Marshmallow (6.0.1) - Go to "Settings" > "Back up and Reset" > "Smart Switch" and select "USB Cable".

Connect both devices with the USB cable and USB Connector to begin

Select "Send" on your old device and "Receive" on your new Galaxy smartphone

Send existing files on your old device and get your new Galaxy smartphone ready to receive these files.

Select your content and start "Transfer"

Select the content you want to transfer from your old device and tap on the "Transfer" button to begin transferring your files.

Before you begin transfer via external storage

Ensure that your old device has a microSD card inserted or is connected to an external USB storage device*.

*OTG connector required.

Back up your data on your old device via Smart Switch

Go to "Settings" > "Cloud and Accounts" > "Smart Switch" and select "External Storage" on the Smart Switch app*.

*For Galaxy devices on Android Marshmallow (6.0.1) - Go to "Settings" > "Back up and Reset" > "Smart Switch" and select "USB Cable".

Select your content and start "Back Up"

Select the content you want to transfer from your old device and tap on the “Back Up” button to begin transferring your files.

Launch Smart Switch on your new Galaxy smartphone

Remove your microSD card/external USB storage from your old device and connect it to your new device.

On your new device, go to "Settings" > "Cloud and Accounts" > "Smart Switch" and select "External Storage"*.

*For Galaxy devices on Android Marshmallow (6.0.1) - Go to "Settings" > "Back up and Reset" > "Smart Switch" and select "External Storage (SD card, USB storage)".

Select your content and start "Restore"

Select the content you want to transfer to your new device and tap on the "Restore" button to begin transferring your files.

Back up your data on your old device via Cloud Storage

On your old device, go to "Settings" > "Cloud Storage" > "Back up Cloud Storage"

Ensure connection to Wi-Fi® to commence backup.

Launch Smart Switch on your new Galaxy smartphone

Go to "Settings" > "Cloud and Accounts" > "Smart Switch" and select "Wireless"1.

To begin transfer, select Galaxy smartphone to receive and select old device accordingly when prompted.

Sign in to your Cloud Storage Account2 from your Galaxy smartphone.

2Upon signing in to your Cloud Storage Account, if prompted, do ensure to turn off two-factor authentication.
