What do I do if an app I have downloaded is causing problems when using my Samsung device?

Check that all your applications are up to date

If you are having problems with your device that you suspect may be caused by a 3rd party application that you downloaded we first recommended making sure all your applications are up to date. Any bugs in an application that may be causing your device problems may well be fixed in an update that is awaiting installation.

Open each application and check their settings for options to manually start updates or enable automatic ones.

Turn your device on in Safe Mode

If the problems persist after updating all your apps turn off your device and start it in Safe Mode to determine if the problems are being caused by 3rd party apps or not. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Make sure your device is turned off.

2. Press and hold the Power key to boot up your device.

3. After the start-up animation begins to display press and hold the Volume down key.

If the above steps didn't work follow these steps:

1. Make sure your device is turned off.

2. Press and hold the Power key to boot up your device.

3. Press the What do I do if an app I’ve downloaded is causing problems when using my Samsung device? Menu key when the Samsung logo appears.

When the lock screen is displayed Safe mode is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen. Use your phone as you normally would and see if the problems are still present.

If the problems are still present no 3rd party application is causing them (3rd party apps don't run in Safe Mode). In this case it is worth searching the Samsung website for other possible solutions and, if you can't find any, contacting customer support for further assistance.

To start your device in normal mode again just restart your device.

If the problems are not present in Safe Mode the cause is much more likely a 3rd party app. In this case follow these steps (in either Safe Mode or Normal Mode):

1. From the Home screen touch App Icon Apps.

2. Touch What do I do if an app I’ve downloaded is causing problems when using my Samsung device? Settings (you may need to swipe left or right to locate it first).

3. Touch Application manager (if using a Galaxy S4 you may need to touch the More tab first).

4. Touch the app you suspect is causing problems and then touch Uninstall.

5. Restart the device in Normal Mode and see if the problems have disappeared.

6. If the problem(s) persist repeat the previous five steps with another application that you suspect is at fault. Keep repeating these steps until the faulty application is uninstalled and your device is free of the problems. Please also alert the developer of this app about its problems.

If after uninstalling many apps you still find the problems haven't gone away it is worth searching the Samsung website for other possible solutions and, if you can't find any, contacting customer support for further assistance.
