What is ECG with Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification?
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a test that measures your heart's electrical activity to create a recording of your heart rate and rhythm. The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature periodically measures your heart rate and notifies you to take an ECG if it detects an irregular rhythm suggestive of atrial fibrillation.
How do I use ECG with Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification?

1. Download and install Samsung Health Monitor

To download and install Samsung Health Monitor:
1. Pair your Galaxy Watch to your Galaxy smartphone using Bluetooth.
2. Connect your Galaxy Watch to the Galaxy Wearable app on your smartphone and update the watch software.
3. Download the Samsung Health Monitor app from the Galaxy Store.
4. Open Samsung Health Monitor on your phone and set up your profile.
Note you must be at least 22 years old to use Samsung Health Monitor
After you set up your profile, you can set up the Samsung Health Monitor features that are available in your region.
2. Set up and record an ECG with your Galaxy Watch

To set up ECG:
1. Make sure you have the latest version of Samsung Health Monitor on your phone and Watch. It’s available from the Galaxy Store.
2. Open Samsung Health Monitor on your phone and tap ECG.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions. -
Before you record an ECG:
1. You should be still for 5-10 minutes beforehand.
2. Make sure the sensor on the back of the watch is clean and dry.
3. Wear the watch snugly and away from your wrist bone so it lays flat.
4. Rest your arms comfortably on a flat surface. -
To record an ECG:
1. On the paired Galaxy Watch, open Samsung Health Monitor and tap ECG.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your result will be synced to the paired Galaxy smartphone.

You may see one of the following ECG results:
Sinus Rhythm: A Sinus Rhythm is when the heart beats in a consistent rhythm. This occurs when the heart’s upper and lower chambers beat in sync. A Sinus Rhythm result is based only on that particular ECG recording and doesn’t mean your heart beats uniformly all the time. Also, a Sinus Rhythm result does not guarantee that you are not experiencing an arrhythmia or other health condition. If you are not feeling well regardless of your result, contact your doctor.
Atrial Fibrillation: Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib, is when the heart beats in an irregular rhythm. This occurs when the heart’s upper chambers beat out of sync with the lower chambers. AFib is the most common form of irregular heartbeat. If not treated, it can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other health problems.
Inconclusive: An Inconclusive result means that the ECG recording could not be classified. This could happen if:
- The heart rate during the recording was less than 50 bpm.
- The heart rate during recording was greater than 100 bpm and the rhythm was not AFib.
- The heart rhythm was AFib and the heart rate was greater than 120 bpm.
- The heart rhythm was neither sinus rhythm nor AFib.
If you get this result repeatedly, contact your doctor.
Poor recording: A Poor recording result means Samsung Health Monitor was not able to analyze the data. A poor recording usually happens because your body moved during recording or the Galaxy Watch didn't have enough skin contact with your wrist or finger.

3. Turn on irregular heart rhythm notifications

How it works:
When the Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) feature is on, your Galaxy Watch will check your pulse a few times a day when you’re still.
Your Watch and phone will notify you if your Watch detects 1 hour of an irregular rhythm that suggests atrial fibrillation. -
To turn on irregular heart rhythm notifications:
1. Record an ECG that isn't a poor recording.
2. Open Samsung Health Monitor on your phone and tap Get started on the ECG home screen.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your Galaxy Watch is not constantly looking for atrial fibrillation. This means your Galaxy Watch can’t detect all instances of atrial fibrillation. You may not get a notification even if you have atrial fibrillation. You won’t be notified for episodes of atrial fibrillation that last less than 1 hour.
4. Confirm irregular heart rhythm notification with an ECG

If you get an irregular heart rhythm notification, be sure to take an ECG as soon as possible so you have a more accurate record of your heart rhythm.

After you take an ECG, the ECG data is synced to the paired Galaxy Smartphone where a PDF report is created. Use the ECG result to decide whether to contact your doctor. You can view your detailed ECG results on the paired smartphone and share them with your doctor.

Things to know before using ECG:
1. The ECG app should not be used for any diagnostic purposes.
The ECG app cannot diagnose cardiac conditions or look for signs of a heart attack.
2. The ECG app is not meant to replace traditional methods of diagnosis or treatment by a qualified healthcare professional.
If you think you are having a medical emergency, contact your local emergency services immediately.
3. DO NOT change your medications or dosage without first consulting your doctor.
4. DO NOT interpret or take clinical action based on the ECG app measurements without first consulting with a qualified healthcare professional.
5. DO NOT use the ECG app if you have an implanted pacemaker, implanted cardiac defibrillator, or other implanted electronic devices.
6. DO NOT use the ECG app if you have known arrhythmia other than Atrial Fibrillation.
Instructions for Use (IFU): ECG with Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification
1 Requires Samsung Galaxy Smartphone with Android 9.0 or higher and Samsung Health Monitor app (available only at the Samsung Galaxy app store).
The Samsung ECG Monitor Application with Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification is an over-the-counter (OTC) software-only, mobile medical application for informational use only in adults 22 years and older. The app analyzes pulse rate data to identify episodes of irregular heart rhythms suggestive of atrial fibrillation (AFib) and provides a notification suggesting the user record an ECG to analyze the heart rhythm. The Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification Feature is not intended to provide a notification on every episode of irregular rhythm suggestive of AFib and the absence of a notification is not intended to indicate no disease process is present; rather the feature is intended to opportunistically acquire pulse rate data when the user is still and analyze the data when determined sufficient toward surfacing a notification.
The ECG Monitor App is not intended to replace traditional methods of diagnosis or treatment. The ECG app is not intended for users with known arrhythmias other than AFib or users under 22 years old. Users should not interpret or take clinical action based on the device output without consultation of a qualified healthcare professional.
2 ECG (v 1.1) is compatible with Galaxy Watch Active2, Galaxy Watch3 and higher. ECG with irregular heart rhythm notification (v1.2) is compatible with Galaxy Watch4 and higher running WearOS 4.0 or higher.

1 A Galaxy Watch (Galaxy Watch 4 and later released models)* and Samsung Galaxy smartphone (Android N OS version or higher) are required to use Samsung Health Monitor app. Due to country restrictions in obtaining approval/registration as a medical device, Samsung Health Monitor app only works on watches and smartphones purchased in the countries where the service is currently available. However, service may be restricted/unavailable when users travel to non-service countries and do a factory reset of the phone or delete and re-install the Samsung Health Monitor app.
