Iris Recognition LED

heart icon

The iris recognition feature uses the unique characteristics of your irises, such as their shape and pattern, to strengthen the security of your device. Your iris data can be used for various authentication purposes. After registering your irises, you can set the device to use your irises for the following features:

Samsung Pass (Samsung account verification and web sign-in) | Samsung Pay | Screen lock | Secure Folder

Before using the iris recognition camera and LED, keep the following precautions in mind:

  • If you attach screen protectors (privacy protection films, tempered glass protectors, etc), the recognition may fail.
  • Do not use iris recognition with infants. Doing so may damage eyesight.
  • Some people may have dizziness, seizures, epileptic seizures or blackouts triggered by light flashes or patterns, even if they have never had a seizure or blackout before. Anyone who has had a seizure, loss of awareness, or other symptom linked to an epileptic condition, or has a family history of such symptoms or conditions, should see a doctor before using the Iris Scanner. IF YOU EXPERIENCE ABNORMAL SYMPTOMS, SUCH AS SPASMS IN YOUR EYES OR FACIAL MUSCLES OR UNCONSCIOUS MOVEMENT WHILE USING IRIS RECOGNITION, STOP USING IT IMMEDIATELY.
  • DO NOT stare directly into the infrared iris recognition LED as prolonged use can cause eye-strain. Do not stare at the iris recognition LED light when your eyes are less than 20 cm (~8 inches) away from the device, for best results keep your eyes between 25-35 cm (~10-14 inches) away for optimum recognition.
  • If you look at the iris recognition LED for more than 10 seconds or you are too close to it, the device will automatically stop iris recognition.
  • The Iris Scanner is not intended to be used as a medical device and the biometric data collected and stored locally by the mechanism is not intended to be used for any diagnostic, therapeutic, or preventative purposes. Please follow all instructions for use of this feature.

Caution! Don’t walk or operate a vehicle while using the Iris Scanner. Please follow all instructions for use of this feature.

For Better Iris Recognition

  • When scanning your irises, keep a distance of 25-35 cm (~10-14 inches) between the device and your eyes and look at the screen held even with your eyes. You should hold your head and the device still while using this feature; do not walk, ride in, or operate a vehicle while using Iris Reconition LED.
  • If you are wearing glasses or contact lenses, remove them before registering your irises. For best results when using Iris Recognition LED for user authentication, scan your irises under the same conditions under which you registered them.
  • If the area around the Iris Recognition Camera, Iris Recognition LED, or proximity sensor, is dirty, wipe it with an antistatic, soft, dry cloth before using the iris recognition feature.
  • If you attach screen protectors (e.g., privacy protection film or tempered glass protector) or apply stickers, ink or paint around the Iris Recognition Camera or LED, the device may not perform properly.
  • Do not expose the device to excessive impacts or scratch the area around the Iris Recognition Camera and LED with sharp or hard objects; this may damage the LED or camera, causing it to malfunction.
  • If you have undergone laser-assisted vision correction surgery, such as LASIK or LASEK, intraocular lens implant surgery or other eye surgery or if your cornea is cloudy or you have an eye disease that affects your irises, the device may not recognize your irises. Register your irises again before using the iris recognition feature.
  • The device may not recognize your irises in the following situations:
    • If your case and screen protector is blocking the hardware.
    • If you wear glasses, sunglasses, tinted contact lenses, or circular contact lenses;
    • If parts of your irises are hidden by narrowed or puffy eyes, or by dirt on your glasses;
    • If you scan your irises in places with strong light, reflected light, or no light or low-light conditions; and
    • If the area around the iris recognition camera and LED is exposed to humid conditions or water.
