The World's Largest Game Tournament, The 1st World Cyber Games Grand Final Opens

The 1st World Cyber Games (WCG, Co-chairman: Namkung, Jin and Yun, Jong-Yong) held its grand opening today at Seoul's KOEX Convention Hall. Until December 9th, 389 participants from 37 countries will compete in this 5-day tournament. Among many international notables attending the opening ceremony were Co-chairmen Namkung, Jin (Minister of Culture and Tourism) and Yun, Jong-Yong (Vice Chairman & CEO of Samsung Electronics) as well as Stuart Moulder, General Manager of Microsoft's Game Division. Meehyun Kim, a Korean born LPGA star and known game follower also grabbed attention by attending the ceremony. The ceremony started with a performance by Choi, So-Ri, a renowned Korean entertainer, and was followed by the introduction of participating nations and players, honorable guests' congratulatory speeches, players' oath, and official announcement of the grand opening.

The grand opening ceremony was aired live by MBC, the tournament's main TV broadcaster, with additional air time through a live-cast by Gembc, a Korean game cable channel and Lycos Korea (wcg.lycos.co.kr). The ceremony was emceed by Il Hoon Chung, a game caster and Jennifer Clyde (a former MC of Arirang TV), and culminated with a congratulatory speech from President Kim, Dae Jung.

"Cyber games are a business with high added value, based on knowledge and cultural creativity. It also serves as a link that interconnects young people of the world," said President Kim in his telegram message. "I hope that the 1st WCG will help our nation to become recognized as one of leaders in game, knowledge industry and IT infrastructure, as well as help the world's game-loving young people exchange information and build friendships."

Minister Namkung, Jin of Culture and Tourism, said in his opening speech, "I am very proud that the largest game festival of the world is held in Korea. I expect every player in this event to do their best in the competition, display fair manners and contribute to games' growth to true e-sports."

"Today, computers are the most powerful communications tools which help to interconnect people. In this sense, the First World Cyber Games are a great success as it interconnects gamers of the world through computers," said Stuart Moulder in his congratulatory speech.

After the players' oath given by Lim, Yo-Hwan, the captain of Korean national team, and the subsequent official announcement of the grand opening by Yun, Jong-Yong, the co-chairman of organization committee, the competition commenced.

Through a double elimination tournament from the round of 16 that follows a full round robin preliminary in each fight for the first two days of Dec. 5 and 6, final winners and runners-up will be decided on Dec. 9. The organizing committee has prepared free gifts for the first 100 spectators, while the 1,001st, 2001st and 10,001st visitors will receive sporting goods from Nike, two round-trip tickets to Cheju Island, and a Pentium 4 processor based computer system, respectively. Harry Potter Game's promotion booth, a dance festival sponsored by D-TECH, and free PCzone provided by ilifezone will provide additional fun for visitors.

In addition to the exciting game festival, which spectators can enjoy, international conferences will also be held at the COEX Auditorium starting from Dec. 6, where leaders of the world game industry will do keynotes and lectures on the future of on-line games.

Microsoft's Stuart Moulder will give a keynote speech on "The Future of On-Line Gaming and Multi-Platforms", while Brian Reynolds, President and CEO of Big Huge Games, who participated in the WCG Forum last year, will also give his own keynote speech. Also Cliff Bleszinski, a key developer of Unreal Tournament's 3D engine, and Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic, are scheduled to preside over sessions on rendering, networking and artificial intelligence.

About the World Cyber Games
WCG was reborn as a true "international e-sports culture festival" as the first WCG was officially launched with the turn of the century. WCG will hold its first world tournament, the 1st World Cyber Games at the Convention Hall of COEX from Dec. 5 ~ 9, 2001 with gamers representing 37 countries from around the world. WCG will lead the youth entertainment culture in the digital age and grow as the first global cultural festival incorporating an e-sports concept in an emerging game industry. The WCG tournament will be aired live by MBC, the official broadcaster of the tournament and can be viewed live through Gembc and Lycos(wcg.lycos.co.kr).
