Winchester Father and Son Win Trip to 2002 Olympic Winter Games

Winchester, Mass. (January 29, 2002) Michael Cramer, 28, of Winchester, Mass., was recently selected as one of the grand prize winners of Samsung "Spirit of Sport" essay contest. The contest asked entrants to submit a short essay identifying a person who motivated them to participate in sports ? and describe how that encouragement changed their life both on and off the athletic field. As part of the grand prize package, Mike has won a trip for himself and his mentor ? his father Vin ? to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Cramer's essay described how his father used sports and coaching as a way to impart life lessons that apply to athletics and life. Mike also touched on how their mutual love of baseball, not to mention their beloved Boston Red Sox, helped create a father-son bond that has remained strong throughout the years. Always there to encourage his son, Vin, 55, served as Mike's mentor though years of high school soccer, basketball and baseball competition, and when Mike approached the finish line at the Boston Marathon in April 2000, his father was the first to lend a helping hand.

"When I was running in the Boston Marathon, my dad jumped out and ran with me for a few miles," said Mike, who will receive his M.B.A. from New York University in May. "It was the lift I needed to finish the race and a perfect example of how he's always been there for me, in sports as well as in life."
"Mike and I have always had a great father-son relationship and sports has been a constant part of our life through the years," Said Vin, an engineer who resides in Winchester with his wife, Kathy. "Attending the Olympic Winter Games is a dream come true, and sharing that experience with my son will make it even more special."

The Samsung "Spirit of Sport" Contest ran from October 8 to November 26 of last year and was promoted nationally. A panel of Olympic and sports experts ? including Olympic gold medalists Bonnie Blair (speed skating) and Eric Bergoust (freestyle aerial skiing) ? judged the entries. The five winners and their mentors will travel to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and will be honored in a special ceremony on February 20 at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, a major attraction in the Salt Lake Olympic Square that showcases Samsung's expertise in digital wireless telecommunications equipment and provides fans and athletes with the opportunity to interact with the equipment and technology.
