SDI Develops AM OLED for IMT 2000

SDI successfully developed the 2.2" full-color AM OLED (active matrix organic light emitting diode) applying the CMOS technology for the second time, following Japan's Sanyo. The driver circuit of this 2.2" (176?20, 41.9mm horizontal, 56.2mm vertical) full-color AM OLED, expected to be the standard model deployed in the IMT 2000 handset, is internally installed.

CMOS is an advanced technology that can integrate the driver circuit onto the display board using low-temperature poly(multi crystallization) silicon CMOS TFT, thereby greatly reducing the size and thickness of a mobile phone or 3G handset, when applied to the organic EL. In addition, Sony, TDK, Pioneer and other manufacturers worldwide are competing to secure this technology, as it offers such strengths as lower manufacturing costs and simpler module processes.

The product boasts a resolution of 128ppi (pixel per inch) and 176?20 pixels using a driver circuit and high-precision mask independently designed by SDI. Furthermore, it provides an unlimited viewing angle and is capable of visualizing not only high quality moving pictures but also natural images, with fast response time and perfect reproduction of 260,000 colors.

In September of last year SDI launched the product design, a venture that proved successful, thanks to an investment of $1.2 billion and the efforts of a twenty-member workforce. Pilot production is scheduled to begin in January 2003 at the pilot line in the Kiheung Central Research Institute.
Senior Vice President Ho-Gyun Chung, who is in charge of AM OLED development at the Central Research Institute, commented, "Through this achievement, we will not only be able to secure independent design and process technology for full-color AM OLED of various sizes but we will also be able to begin mass production earlier."
