SAMSUNG Electronics Ships Samples of World's First 128M SDRAM

SEOUL, Korea - February 24, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has become the world's first to complete development of the 128-megabit synchronous dynamic random access memory (SDRAM) chip, the next-generation device to succeed the 64M SDRAM.

Company officials have announced that the first batch of samples has already been shipped to a major American computer maker and that full-scale production will begin in the second quarter of this year.

The 128M SDRAM is (technologically) the next step up from the 64M SDRAM and one stage before the 256M SDRAM. It is well suited for satisfying demand for computers and multimedia products that have more functions, greater integration and higher capacities.

Although the same size as the current 64M DRAM, the design and processing technologies for 128M SDRAM are more advanced. Since there is no size difference, the new device can be used immediately in current systems without having to make any changes. This reduces cost while upgrading the integration of multimedia products. Because of such advantages, the new device is expected to be a chip market leader.

The 128-megabit modules developed so far were(possible) through stacking two 64M DRAM chips placed together in the same package, however, Samsung*s 128M device is all in one single-chip - a world*s first of its kind. Thus, as a single chip, it offers advantages related to cost, operating speed, size and low energy consumption - as mentioned above.

Samsung has used high-precision 0.23-micron
(1 micron = 1/1,000,000 mm) design technology to develop the new 128M SDRAM. A single device can store the equivalent of 1,500 standard newspaper pages or 42,000 pages of 200-character manuscript paper.

With full 167MHz support, it can be used with next-generation high-performance PCs such as the PC-100 with 100MHz bus
(being promoted by Intel). Moreover, the 128M SDRAM is designed to operate on the same power as the 64M DRAM.

Samsung Electronics Co.,t Ltd., a US $19 billion flagship company of Korean-based the Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries.
