SAMSUNG Targets High Performance Entry-Level Windows NT Servers; New Low-Cost Platforms Based on 500MHz to 633MHz Alpha Processors

LAS VEGAS, USA - April 6, 1998 - Samsung Semiconductor Inc (SSI) today introduced a series of entry-level server solutions based on its KP21164 family of Alpha processors, with performance ranging from 500MHz to 633MHz.
The new SMB-UXB entry-level server platform series comes with 64MB of main memory, 2MB or 4MB level-3 cache, power supply, Entry-level Server Tower Chassis and a choice of 500MHz, 566MHz or 633MHz KP21164 Alpha Processor.

These new Alpha-based platforms are ideal for the SOHO and Web community and will be distributed through existing Samsung channels to the VARs and system integrators who serve these markets.

Samsung also introduced its new SMB-UX motherboards and processors designed for final assembly by system OEMs. All SMB-UXB/UX motherboards come with integrated Ultra-II Symbios SCSI and 10/100Mbs Ethernet controllers, and are priced from $1,099 to $3,610, suggested retail.

The board-level solutions offer 13.5 SPECint95/20 SPECfp95 to 18 SPECint95/27 SPECfp95. Ideally, OEMs and VARs can fully equip and sell an entry-level Windows NT server that is 1.5 to 2.5 times faster than a Pentium Pro 200MHz-based server starting from less than $2,995 with more than 30% margin. The boards also feature six PCI slots and can accommodate 1.5GB of main memory using 256MB DIMMs while many other entry-level servers can only accommodate 512MB of main memory.

"Samsung's goal is to provide the ideal, highest performance/price entry-level server platform under Windows NT for the SOHO and Web community," said Y.J. Kim, Director of Alpha Marketing at Samsung in San Jose, Calif. "By doing so, we can provide Windows NT in high performance platforms at a range of price points based on Alpha."

Samsung also encourages companies to move up the value chain to use Digital Equipment's AlphaServers for mission critical departmental or enterprise-level computing, Kim said. "Today, most server applications under Windows NT are native on Alpha, and these SOHO and Web community users will benefit tremendously by using these entry-level Alpha platforms."
