SAMSUNG Electro-Mechanics Signs V-Chip Partnership Deal with Parental Guide Company

OMAHA, Neb., USA - April 6, 1998 - Parental Guide (TM), the originator of the violence chip or V-chip and Korea-based Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co (SEM), announced today that they will work together to build cable converter boxes and retrofit units that incorporate Parental Guide's V-chip.
The partnership benefits Samsung, Parental Guide and consumers as a larger number of V-chip retrofit converter units will be available in the marketplace sooner than expected. With Samsung's high-tech manufacturing capabilities, the number of units produced could number up to 500,000 in the first year.

Available this spring, the V-chip retrofit devices will be sold under the Parental Guide label and several other well-known brand names bearing the Parental Guide trademark. The retrofit devices will be available at all major electronics and general merchandise outlets.

Parental Guide has over 15 years experience with cable and V-chip development while Samsung is a leading supplier of consumer electronics including cable converter boxes. The companies have worked together on numerous projects in the past including the development of hardware and software packages.

"The partnership between Parental Guide and Samsung will provide consumers with patented, V-chip technology from a proven leader in the consumer electronics industry," said David Abboud, Vice President, Parental Guide. "In addition, it will provide our expanding base of private-labelers another option when choosing a manufacturer."

The V-chip is designed to fit inside television sets or in stand-alone retrofit units and through a patented process of encoding and decoding, selectively prevent the reception and replay of unwanted transmissions.

Based in Omaha, Nebraska, Parental Guide was formed in 1983 as a mail order communication and consumer electronic business, warehousing video equipment out of its 27,000-square foot location. Born out of growing grass root complaints of children accessing objectionable electronic media, Parental Guide developed screening technology to address the increasing sex and violence on television. http://www.parentalguide.com
