SAMSUNG Electronics Develops MMIC for IMT-2000 Handsets

SEOUL, Korea - April, 8, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., completed development of the Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC), a high-frequency device for personal communications service (PCS) handsets. Now, the company has developed an MMIC prototype that can be operated at 2.7 volts(which is quite low) and is designed for IMT-2000 handsets. The next-generation IMT-2000 will provide seamless operation of mobile terminals throughout the world.

The new MMIC can receive and transmit signals in the 2-gigahertz spectrum. Therefore, it can accommodate both the requirements of IMT-2000 handsets, which operate between 2.12 and 2.17 GHz, and the Global Mobile Personal Communications by Satellite (GMPCS) handsets being promoted by Intermediate Circular Orbit Global Communications (ICO). The GMPCS network will operate in a band between 2.17 and 2.2 GHz.

Last October, Samsung Electronics joined cdmaOne in order to be on the front line in the standardization of IMT-2000 technology. Samsung's development of the MMIC for IMT-2000 is very significant considering that the world market for IMT-2000 handsets is expected to explode, reaching 26million units (worth US$26 billion) in 2002 and increasing 140% to 77 million units (worth US$61.6 billion) in 2003.
