SAMSUNG Electronics Develops TFT- LCD for Car Navigation Systems

SEOUL, Korea - July, 3, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has completed development of a TFT-LCD screen for car navigation systems and plans to go into mass production of the new product next year. The screen measures 5.8 inches and has 400-pixel by 234-pixel resolution. The car navigation system TFT-LCD has been specially designed to resist greater vibration and shock, and to withstand a wider temperature range (from -30°C to +85°C) than notebook PC TFT-LCD screens do.

Left and right viewing angle is up to 120 degrees, and the screen is visible in surroundings with a luminous intensity of to 400 candela per square meter. This means that the screen can be read even when exposed to direct sunlight. The screen brightness can be adjusted for night time use, while the screen has an aspect ratio of 16:9. The screen has a multi-window function and can offer such diverse information as maps, moving pictures and text.

Samsung Electronics sees this product as an opportunity to expand involvement in non-computer applications for TFT-LCDs. Company officials plan to improve their ability to accommodate the market for small and medium-sized LCDs and to be involved in a full range of products, from PDAs to notebook PCs. In fact, Samsung Electronics will soon be producing 5.8` TFT-LCDs for car navigation systems, 12.1` and 15` models for notebook PCs, and models ranging between 15` and 30` for desktop monitors.

Market Outlook
Car navigation systems utilize satellite communications to inform the driver of his / her location and to offer the best route for reaching the desired destination. The systems also provide information of roads, service station locations and traffic conditions. The screens for these systems can also be used for TVs and digital videodisc players inside the automobile or for the automobile PCs that are expected to become widely used in the future. The world market for these tscreens is forecast at 1.8 million units in 1998 and to increase to 4 million units by the year 2000.
