SAMSUNG Electronics Starts Mass Production of 128M SDRAMs

SEOUL, Korea - July, 29, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., In February, began shipping samples of the world's first 128M synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) to major US computer makers for testing. Since then, purchase orders have increased steadily, prompting Samsung Electronics to move up the production schedule.

The 128M SDRAM is used mainly in PC servers, of which the world market is expected to grow from two million units in 1998 to 2.2 million units in 1999. This growth of PC server market will help increase demand for the new chips.

By initiating mass production before the competitors, Samsung Electronics will secure a strong market position and enjoy higher profitability than what can be received from 64M SDRAM sales. Samsung Electronics will start by producing 100,000 of the new chips a month and plans to boost monthly production volume to one million units by the end of this year.

The value-added 128M SDRAM takes the design and process technologies for the 64M SDRAM a step further. The physical size of the two chips is the same, but the 128M SDRAM requires a design rule of 0.23 micron. A single 128M SDRAM is capable of storing the data equivalent of 1,050 newspaper pages.

The data processing speed of this next-generation device is 133MHz, making it well suited for next-generation, high-performance computers such as the PC-100. At the same time, the 128M SDRAM version consumes no more power than the 64M SDRAM chip.
According to Director Eui-Yong Chung of the Samsung Electronics Marketing Team, `By going into mass production of the 128M SDRAM, we have gained a leading position in the next-generation DRAM market and we expect to enter the markets for PC servers, workstations, and next-generation PCs with new specifications.`
