SAMSUNG shares the Olympic experience with record numbers during the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Gamess

August 30, 2004 (Athens) : Since 1997 Samsung has been involved in the Olympic Games including the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. Its activities in the latest event have however set new standards with over 800,000 spectators visiting the OR@S, the centerpiece of Samsung's activities in the heart of the Olympic Complex in Athens. This combined with WOW (Wireless Olympic Works - an initiative from Samsung providing over 14,000 mobile phones to IOC and ATHOC officials and VIPS with the first sports information wireless communications system to be used at the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games) have both brought new levels of entertainment as well as helped the smooth running of the Games.
Samsung's presence has been focused around helping people ‘share the Olympic experience' whether they are athletes, spectators, officials or VIPs. The statistics behind the various Samsung initiatives underline the success of ATHENS 2004.
Following a prestigious opening event (attended by Vice Chairman & CEO of Samsung Electronics, Mr. Jong Yong Yun, President of the ATHENS 2004 Organising Committee, Ms. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki and the Mayor of Athens, Ms. Dora Bakoyianni), the OR@S has also played host to a large number of athletes and VIPs ? 9 ,000 over the 16 days. This is the third Games at which Samsung has provided this facility but the first time it has been designated the ‘Official Meeting Place for Athletes and Their Families'. In addition, it has held over 96 events and celebrity appearances which have kept crowds entertained throughout each day. Research* shows that 75% of visitors to OAKA (the Athens Olympic Sports Complex ) believe that it was the most impressive exhibition and entertainment facility.
Senior Vice President and Chief Communications Officer of Samsung Electronics,
Mr. Il-Hyung Chang said, “I am delighted that so many spectators have chosen to enjoy the many exciting activities at OR@S. We were honored when the OR@S was designated as ‘the official meeting place for athletes and their families' and very pleased that we have been able to assist so many athletes at the Games. As a sponsor our aim is to add value and the fact that 50% of visitors to OAKA also choose to visit OR@S suggests we have been doing this very successfully.”
Samsung's Athlete Ambassador, Greek long jumper Niki Xanthou, who competed for the host country in these Olympic Games, summed up the feeling amongst athletes visiting the OR@S. She said, “ I would like to thank Samsung on behalf of all the athletic family for having set up for the third time the Official Meeting Place for us and our families at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung. I look forward to seeing you all in T orino for the 2006 Winter Games! ”
Over the period of the Games, OR@S has featured three main activities:
The Athlete Center - The Athlete Center is the “Official Meeting Place for Athletes and Their Families” during the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games. The Center has provided a home- away- from-home for visiting athletes and their guests providing a haven for relaxation. Visiting athletes have been able to take advantage of free food, drinks and internet access. The athletes have sent over 115,000 emails and over 7,500 athletes have made use of free Share the Experience calls to keep in contact with friends and family.
The Spectator Cent re - The Spectator Center on the ground floor has showcased some of Samsung's contributions to the world of wireless communications. Visitors have been able to see demonstrations of Samsung's unique and innovative information system WOW (Wireless Olympic Works) which allows ATH ENS 2004 officials and organizers to access up-to-the-minute Olympic scores and other data while on the move as well as over 57 additional new phones.
A popular facility within the Spectator Center is the Samsung camera phone and printing where over 25000 spectators have received an actual photo of themselves within the OR@S .
Loop Plaza - situated immediately outside the OR@S building , this area has been dedicated to live entertainment and exhibits. The Loop Plaza has played host to public appearances from Olympians, Samsung's laser shows , National Day celebrations, sports memorabilia auctions, an Olympic Torch Relay exhibit and other live dance, music, acrobatics and street theatre performances.
In addition to the OR@S, Samsung has also been actively supporting the Games in other areas including WOW, on-line, via a dedicated booth for Athletes in the Olympic Village, supporting the charity Right To Play and in the lead up to the Games being one of two Proud Presenters of the global Olympic Torch Relay.
Samsung now look forward to the Torino 2006 winter Olympics and Beijing 2008 Games as a TOP sponsor with the objective of inviting even more people from around the globe to share the Olympic experience.
Stats and Facts During the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games
•  7,500 phone calls were made by athletes (and their families) in the athlete center within the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung

•  510,000 clicks to the Samsung Olympic Website

•  30,000 minutes were spent on the phone

•  5,000 text messages were sent to 187 countries

•  9,000 athletes visited the OR@S

•  40 athletes appeared on stage at the OR@S

•  800,000 + spectators visited the OR@S

•  28,500 euros was raised by Samsung and the charity Right To Play to help disadvantaged kids throughout the world

•  16 master classes were performed on stage to provide hints and tips to the public by 20 athletes

•  96 events were held in OR@S

•  115,000 emails were sent from the OR@S

•  375,000 Samsung technology demonstrations were presented to spectators

•  25,000 photographs of spectators were taken and printed in the OR@S
