SAMSUNG ATM-ADSL Used in Korea Telecom Field Test

SEOUL, Korea - September, 21, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., The Central Research Institute has become Korea's first to complete development of ATM-based Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ATM-ADSL) system that uses Discrete Multi-tone (DTM) technology for offering super-fast multimedia services over conventional telephone lines. Company officials announced that field tests have now begun.

Known as AceLinkTM, this new hardware delivers data transmission rates of up to 8Mbps downstream, two hundred times faster than a conventional dial-up modem. AceLinkTM consists of a Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM), CPE (Consumer Premises Equipment) and NMS(Network Management System).

Each AceLinkTM rack accommodates 570 subscribers, the highest integration currently available. It supports PPP over ATM over ADSL protocol.

To ensure multi-vendor interoperability, AceLinkTM is fully compliant with the specifications set by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication Standards (ITU-T), ADSL Forum and ATM Forum. The key components can be custom made to enhance both price and performance competitiveness.

A splitter to separate Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) from the data channels can either be built in or provided externally, depending on existing conditions. This flexibility solves the wiring problem, the most troublesome aspect of ATM-ADSL installation.

Moreover, subscribers can choose between two types of terminals: an external modem or PC card type modem.

Samsung Electronics is providing its ATM-ADSL system to Korea Telecom, which is now offering a test service to subscribers in the Taejon area. This field test will confirm the technical support and suitability of AceLinkTM.

Samsung Electronics is building on its ATM-ADSL technology to develop UADSL system. Eventually, the company plans to offer a completet line-up of xDSL products.
