SAMSUNG Electronics Mass-produces CD-ROM Motor Driver IC

Seoul, South Korea - October, 28, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., is the first in Korea to begin mass-producing a single chip CD-ROM motor driver IC and is taking aim at a lucrative market for PC peripherals. Leading CD-ROM drive makers in Japan have confirmed the outstanding functions of Samsung's new chip, and the company is now negotiating orders. The market prospects for this product look bright, indeed.

Samsung Electronics has managed to consolidate a 4-channel driver IC and a spindle motor IC onto a single chip and is now the first to mass-produce it. By consolidating the two chips into one, power consumption is reduced dramatically and operational errors stemming from interference between the two separate devices is eliminated completely.

As a single chip, performance and convenience are enhanced, while production cost is reduced. Samsung's new chip can be used not only with CD-ROM drives but also with DVD-ROM drives, mini-disc players and car navigation systems. Given its superior performance and wide range of application, Samsung Electronics will be in a strong position in the driver IC market.

Samsung Electronics can now supply the Korean market, estimated at two million driver chips a month, as well as export to PC peripheral makers in Japan and Taiwan. The company expects sales of its new device to reach US $10 million a year.
