Samsung Electronics Develops Merged-Flash-Memory-with-Logic (MFL) Chip

Seoul, South Korea - December, 28, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has completed development of a merged-flash-memory-with-logic (MFL) chip. The new device operates at a low 3.3 volts, and processes data in just 50 nanoseconds.

The flash memory element allows the device to retain data even when the power source is cut off unexpectedly. The chip has software built in that can be altered to satisfy the requirements of any given product in which it is to be installed. As a result, it can accommodate the demands of a rapidly developing market for PCS phones, cellular phones, personal digital assistants, and wireless automatic answering devices.

In addition, the MFL chip guarantees up to 100,000 cycles in endurance. Data stored in the device will remain intact for at least 100 years. With this outstanding reliability and durability, demand for MFLs is expected to increase rapidly for use in such products as digital cameras.

Samsung Electronics came out with its first merged-DRAM-with-logic (MDL) chip in 1996, followed by the development of a merged-SRAM-with-logic (MSL) device. Now armed with the MFL chip, Samsung is in a position to press forward with its system-on-a-chip business, on the core technology for next-generation devices.

Samsung has already completed development of 0.18-micron technology, and plans to apply it to the new MFL. In order to expand its involvement in non-memory devices, Samsung will focus investment on Alpha chips, application-specific ICs, and CDMA chips that have memory and non-memory elements embedded together.

The market for MFL chips is growing fast for use in wireless communications and network products, set-top boxes and multimedia devices. Industry analysts predict this market will be worth US $2 billion in 2000, and double to US$4 billion in 2001.

Chips with various elements embedded in them enjoy distinct advantages over having those elements as separate chips. For example, noise is reduced; there iks only on noise input and output, and power consumption is lowered.
