Forbes Global Selects SAMSUNG Electronics As World`s Premier Consumer Goods & Service Company

SEOUL, Korea - January 11, 1999 - In its first ever A List, a ranking of the world's best companies across 27 industries, Forbes Global Business & Finance selected South Korean-based Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) as the world's premier Consumer Goods & Services company.

Forbes Global distinguishes Samsung Electronics for its ability to invest in new semiconductor production technologies that will drive up productivity and cut manufacturing costs. As a result, the magazine asserts that Samsung Electronics should expect "a 71% jump in EPS in 1999, according to the consensus forecast of analysts." In addition, the company has demonstrated commitment to shedding peripheral businesses and focusing on telecom, semiconductor and digital-products operations.

"We're thrilled Forbes Global handpicked Samsung Electronics in the Consumer Goods & Service category among such worthy competition as Sony and Phillips," said Il-Hyung Chang, vice president of corporate communications. "We're particularly proud to be seen as 'the bright spot in the gloom' that has characterized the South Korean economic climate over the past year. As a leading Korean company, Samsung feels a sense of responsibility in defining a new business era in Korea."

Forbes Global also recognized Samsung Electronics for continuing to restructure its business with the goal of cutting its debt-to-equity ratio to 130% by 2000 from the current 200%. With a 13% five-year return on capital, Samsung Electronics outperformed all other consumer goods & services companies considered for the top slot.

Forbes Global measured A List contenders against five criteria:
.Average annual return on capital between 1993 and 1997*
.Sales growth over the same period
.Change in the company's stock price in the 52 weeks to December 14
.Net profits per employee
.Strong earnings prospects for the year ahead*
.Most heavily weighted criteria. For details, see Forbes Global Business & Finance, January 11,k 1999, edition.
