Olympic Skiing Legend Alberto Tomba Stars in Global SAMSUNG Television Campaign Debuting Today

Torino, February 11, 2006 – Samsung, Worldwide Olympic Partner and Presenting Sponsor of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay, will debut a global TV commercial campaign featuring Olympic skiing legend Alberto Tomba. The spot will air globally beginning on February 11 and throughout the Games in more than a dozen countries.



Samsung selected Tomba as its global athlete ambassador last Spring. His accomplishments include 50 wins in Alpine Ski World Cup competition, three Olympic gold medals and two silver medals.

Last night during the Opening Ceremony of the XX Olympic Winter Games, Alberto Tomba was given the honor to carry the Olympic Flame into Stadio Olimpico in Torino, pausing beneath the five Olympic rings as the crowd saluted him with thousands of flash lights. 



“I have followed the Torch Relay on behalf of Samsung for the last two months, and it was very emotional for me to be chosen to carry the Flame into the Stadium at the first Winter Games in my home country in 50 years,”” said Alberto Tomba. “I’m very excited to be featured in their global advertising campaign and to represent Italy to the rest of the world.  It was a thrill to live what I had already filmed in the commercial”.



The theme of the campaign is “Samsung Salutes the Olympic Games” and the ad depicts the journey of the Olympic Flame through the mountains and countryside of Italy on its way to the Games. The :30 and :15 second spots culminate as Tomba enters the Stadium and the fans salute him with their Samsung mobile phones in the air, illuminating the arena.  Tomba then returns the salute to the fans by raising the Torch.

As Presenting Partner of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay, Samsung helped spread excitement for the Games in Italy and around the world over the last two months.  During its 64-day journey to Torino, the Olympic Flame passed through every region and province of Italy and covered over 11,300 km.  Through global promotions, Samsung chose 1,900 torchbearers including athletes, celebrities and inspiring individuals who embody Olympic spirit, to run with the Torch. 



In his role as Global Athlete Ambassador, Tomba participated in several stops along the Torch Relay and on February 7th, 2006, he helped unveil the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, in Torino, the centerpiece of Samsung’s on-site Olympic programs. He will make a number of appearances to meet fans and media throughout the Games at the OR@S.
