SAMSUNG Develops Core Chip for MP3 Players

SEOUL, Korea - December 20, 1999 - Samsung Electronics officials have announced that the company has localized the production of the CalmRISCTM for Portable Audio Devices (C-PAD) chip, a core component for MP3 players.

Samsung is the first to incorporate the micro-controller unit (MCU), the digital signal processor (DSP), and flash memory on a single chip. The system LSI device is designed to make the finished product smaller, lighter and more power-economic, a general trend in the industry. "Samsung is currently finding ways to improve the competitiveness of our digital products by leveraging our strength in semiconductors. We have already developed a one-chip solution for CD players and chip-sets for DVD players and digital TVs," said Dr. Hyung-Lae Roh, vice president of the LSI Division at Samsung Electronics.

In addition, Samsung expects to greatly boost the price competitiveness of its MP3 players because it will no longer have to import two key components.

Company officials predict they will save US$30 million in import costs by 2002. The device operates on 76mW, which is less power-consuming than conventional devices. As a result, the battery will last 27% longer during playback in a typical portable MP3 player.

The C-PAD comes with a built-in 128KB flash memory. Changing the software stored in this flash memory allows the user to download and playback Microsoft's MS Audio or other audio format files, instead of only MP3 files.

Global sales of MP3 players are skyrocketing at an estimated 260-percent a year, from 700,000 units this year to a forecast 30 million by 2002.

Samsung Electronics is scheduled to go into mass production of its C-PAD chip next April.
