SHI to Concentrate on Advanced Environmental Technology and Digital Control Systems

Samsung Heavy Industries (President & CEO: Hai-kyoo Lee) has determined its future business strategy attaching its corporate weight to the advanced environmental technology and digital control system businesses. Samsung Heavy Ind.(SHI) will annually invest 50 billion won in R&D starting from next year in a bid to foster these sectors into profitable ventures the sale size of 1.5 trillion won by 2005. The digital control system refers to software programs such as the integrated ship control system and navigation system, necessary to operate a ship on the basis of shipbuilding know-how, the industrial plant control system and the intelligent building operation system. Its market is of the size of 6 billion won, expanding rapidly each year. SHI has already secured 180-odd international patents on these sectors. In the case of the navigational system, SHI has received quality certification from the U.S. and European classification societies. Its market sales are expected to reach 100 billion won next year and one trillion won in 2005. So far as the advanced environmental technology is concerned, new technology, through which toxic substances such as wastewater and dioxin principally causing environmental pollution can be disposed of in a revolutionary new method, is in the run-up to commercialization. In collaboration with the Russia Thermophysics Institute, SHI has developed a refuse treatment technology through which toxic gas such as dioxin, sulfur dioxide gas and nitric acid gas is blocked in 1,300? by using plasma. This technology successfully passed demonstration tests, is being applied to the Inchon incinerator now under construction and will be commercialized as from 2001. Also, SHI, in collaboration with Russia Nuclear Physics Institute, has developed a recalcitrant wastewater treatment technology through which new substance is generated by destroying intermolecular connection by means of an electronic beam accelerator, conducted demonstration tests with a great success at the Taegu dyeing park of late, looking forward to receiving many orders. Especially the environmental facility sector, having the market of 2.5 trillion won that is composed of wastewater market of 1.8 trillion won, refuse incineration market of 400 billion won and air contamination control market of 300 billion won, respectively, will be much in demand in the near future according as the pollution monitoring rules become rigid. SHI expects its sales in this sector to rapidly increase starting from 2001 when the plasma using technology is scheduled for commercialization, and plans to accomplish more than 500 billion won of sales in 2005, which is 20% of market share for the year. Concerning this sector, President Hai-kyoo Lee said, as the transfer of power generation facilities to KHIC(Korea Heavy Industry Co.) and a single incorporation of marine engine facilities with KHIC are made, we will concentrate our management force on future-oriented high value added business relating to the advanced environmental projects and the digital control system with the aim of nurturing them into new ventures that make handsome profits. The advanced environmental projects and the digital control system business are the high-yield promising businesses based on the knowledge industry, upon which SHI has poured its intensive capabilities for a long time, for which SHI has carried the development of the software programs with regard to the design for technological development and commercialization, pilot model production and operation technology while outsourcing the development of other relevant hardware. Samsung Heavy Industries has adopted the lines of strengthening its new environment projects and the digital control system business for the first time in the heavy industry of Korea, which means SHI has already made forays into the high-tech, high value-added business world of the digital era in which the environment rounds, E-commerce and information telecommunications play a leading role.
