Historic Mountain Climb for Korean Guide Dogs

Three guide dogs and their users from South Korea will be the country's first service dogs ever to climb Paekdu mountain, the highest peak in the Korean peninsular, as part of worldwide activities to mark International Guide Dog Day on 26 April. The guide dogs, labrado retrievers called Chang-gong("Sky"), Jae-mi("Fun") and To-dam("Chubby") and their visually impaired owners who are all college students, will start their ascent at dawn on 26 April. They will travel part way up the mountain by bus, and then make the final six kilometers to the summit on foot. Paekdu - which literally means "white head" - is regarded as a sacred site in Korea and is historically and politically important as it straddles the North Korean and Chinese borders. Since South Koreans cannot enter North Korea to climb Paekdu from its North Korean side, the guide dogs will instead make the climb from the Chinese border. The climb, organized by electronics company Samsung, which operates South Korea's only Guide Dog School for the Blind, will highlight the need to overcome prejudice surrounding people with disabilities, as well as to inspire Korea's 4.5 million disabled community to challenge public misunderstanding surrounding issues of disability. Samsung has helped drive a number of important changes to improve the welfare of disabled people in Korea, the most significant being the enactment of the Year 2000 Welfare Bill for the Disabled, which now provides all service dog users free and unprohibited access to all public places and on public transport.
