SAMSUNG Launches Next-Generation PC Products

SEOUL, Korea November 8, 2000 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. unveiled today three next-generation PC products that will drive its come back to the international PC market. Of these PCs, the "Sens Q is the first notebook PC developed by a Korean company that contains Bluetooth wireless communications technology. With a thickness of 19.8mm and weighing 1.35 kg, it is one of the lightest and slimmest notebook PCs to be developed thus far. The Sens Q is a sub-notebook PC that can be carried around easily. It also comes with a docking station so the user can use the product much like a desktop PC at home or in the office. In addition, Samsung's new notebook PC features a built-in MP3-player and voice recorder, as well as an attachable high-resolution digital PC camera. The M1500 is a desktop PC that combines the PC, LCD monitor and speakers in one unit. This "all-in-one desktop PC uses only 20 percent of the desk space a conventional computer needs. The M6320 "Home Network PC allows the user to connect two or more PCs via telephone cable creating a computer network at home. Samsung Electronics developed these products in order to respond to the world demand for slimmer and better networked computers. In particular, Samsung invested 5 billion won in order to develop the Sens Q. The project began on November 1999 and was concluded in November of this year. According to IDC, the ultra-portable notebook PC market is expected to grow to 5 million units in 2003, growing at an annual rate of 16 to 17 percent. Samsung's goal is to export 1.3 million units by 2003. In order to accomplish this goal, Samsung will expand its marketing efforts from the Korean market to overseas markets, where the demand for these products is even greater. Samsung will launch the Sens Q in the European market next year under the Samsung brand. Plans are underway to export the Sens Q to the US, as well. Daeje Chin, President and CEO of the Digital Media System Business of Samsung Electronics stated, "Through the launch of these new products, Samsung Electronics expects to not only strengthen its number 1 position in the Korean PC market but also become a major player in overseas PC markets. Sens Q Sens Q is the first product developed by Samsung Electronics to use Bluetooth wireless communications technology. It is 19.8mm thick and weighs just 1.35kg. The product is available with a 500-MHz mobile Intel Pentium III processor, main memory of 64MB or 128MB and a hard disk drive with storage capacity of 10GB or 20GB. The product comes with a docking station that contains a floppy disk drive and DVD-ROM or CD-ROM. The notebook PC display is a 12.1 inch XGA (eXtended Graphics Array; 1,024 x 768 pixels) resolution TFT-LCD (thin film transistor-liquid crystal display). Additional features include an MP3-player function that can be operated without booting the PC, voice recorder function and high-resolution digital PC camera. The product is available in 2 colors: champagne gold and metallic blue. Two models will be available in Korea: the S760-PJ219 and S-760-PJ2L4. They will retail at 3.8 million won and 4.6 million won, respectively. Samsung plans to initially launch Sens Q in the overseas markets of the UK, France and Germany early next year (model number: NV5000). M1500 The M1500 combines a desktop PC, LCD monitor and speakers in one unit, simplifying installation and significantly reducing the unit's footprint. The PC weighs 70% less than the conventional desktop PC and takes up only 20% of the desktop space. In particular, the 15-inch SXGA (Super eXtended Graphics Array; 1,400 x 1,050 pixels) TFT-LCD monitor can be easily adjusted up-down and left-right for the user's comfort. The M1500 is available with a 866-MHz Intel Pentium III CPU, 128MB standard memory, and 30GB hard disk drive. It will retail in the Korean market at 3.75 million won. M6320 The M6320 was designed for homes where 2 or more PCs are used. The user can connect the PCs with a telephone cable in order to construct a home network environment. The purchase of additional cables or hardware is unnecessary. A TV receiver is installed in the product, which can be used to record programs and edit home videos as it can convert analog data from AV equipment into digital data. The M6320 can also be used as a digital entertainment center. This Internet ready PC can also be used as a home server PC allowing the user to transfer files and play network computer games The product is available with either 1-GHz Intel Pentium III CPU (M6320FAD01), 933-MHz Intel Pentium III CPU (M6320FZD01) and 866-MHz Intel Pentium III CPU (M6320FY001). These products will retail in Korea at 4.4 million won, 3.52 million won and 2.75 million won, respectively.
