Luc Julia Receives Award

Created early in the 21st century, the Academy promotes technological progress in the public’s interest. Members, chosen for the depth and diversity of their expertise, formulate proposals and recommendations designed to help guide policy on issues related to technologies and their effects on society. Recently, the Academy was instrumental to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

“The Academy of Technologies is dedicated to proposing solutions for the various societal impacts and ethical issues created by technology. I’m honored to be elected to this organization and I look forward to working with my colleagues to shed light and propose solutions to critical technologies affecting our planet,” said Luc Julia.

A Career of World-Changing Innovations

During his 30-year career, Julia has distinguished himself in multiple areas. He is most widely known as the co-creator of Siri. He co-authored Siri’s core patents in the late 1990s while working at SRI International. Also at SRI, he was co-founder and Director of the Computer Human Interaction Center (CHIC), which pushed for innovative computer/human interaction and built the first smart fridge, smart car, and smart assistant.

Julia co-founded and served as VP of R&D for BravoBrava!, a tech incubator focused on new interfaces for education, multimodal, and multimedia products. The incubator spun out four startups, including Orb Network, which enabled the first Live TV streaming over phones, and Soliloquy Learning, which pioneered a reading assistant combining advanced speech recognition technology with scientifically based interventions to help kids strengthen their reading fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

He also spent time at Hewlett-Packard, where he designed and implemented the industry’s first cloud-based-architecture for connected printers.

In his current role as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at SSIC, Julia oversees the innovation arm of the chief strategy office. Also, he leads Samsung’s AI Lab in Paris with a focus on AI-related advances in perception, planning, natural language, and user interfaces to improve health and well-being, transportation, next-generation IoT solutions and other areas.
