How Do I Retain the Display on My Monitor after Closing My MacBook?

You can use your MacBook with a Samsung monitor in closed-display mode, so that even when the MacBook is closed, it keeps running, and the desktop display still appears on the monitor. To do this, you will need to have the MacBook plugged into an outlet and charging, and have an external keyboard and mouse.

For more detailed information on this functionality, including connecting through Bluetooth and turning closed-display mode off, click here to continue to the Apple support website's article about closed-display mode.

The following Apple products support the use of a Samsung monitor while the internal display is closed:

  • MacBook Pro
  • MacBook Pro with Retina display
  • MacBook
  • MacBook Air

If your MacBook is being used with a wired keyboard and mouse:

  1. Make sure the computer is plugged into a power outlet and charging.
  2. Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to your computer.
  3. With the computer turned on, connect to the appropriate port on the monitor and turn the monitor on.
  4. Once the desktop display appears on the monitor, close the computer's lid (it may briefly flash blue before showing your desktop display again).

You can now use your MacBook to work as usual.
