Smart Features on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Smart features enhance the way you interact with your device. Using built-in cameras and sensors, your device can coordinate with your movements for seamless operation.

Smart Stay

The Smart stay feature uses the front-facing camera to sense when you are looking at your device so the screen stays on regardless of the screen timeout setting.

  1. From the Home screen, navigate to Apps > Settings.

  2. Touch the CONTROLS tab.

To switch to the tab view, touch Menu > Switch to tab view.

  3. Touch Smart screen.

  4. Mark the Smart stay checkbox to turn on the feature and touch OK.

Turn On Using the Quick Panel

You can also quickly turn Smart stay on or off from the Quick Panel. Using two fingers slightly separated, swipe from the top of the screen to the bottom, and then touch Smart stay.

Smart stay works best under the following conditions:

  • When the device is held steady and upright.
  • When the device is in well-lit conditions, but the screen is not in direct light.
  • When the front-facing camera is not being used by another app.

Smart Rotation

The Smart rotation feature uses the front-facing camera to sense when you are looking at your device, and it keeps your screen from rotating (based on your face's orientation). If you are viewing your device in portrait mode and happen to lie back on your couch, the screen remains in portrait mode.

  1. From the Home screen, navigate to Apps > Settings.

  2. Touch the CONTROLS tab.

To switch to the tab view, touch Menu > Switch to tab view.

  3. Touch Smart screen.

  4. Mark the  Smart rotation checkbox to turn on the feature and touch OK.

Smart rotation may not work in the following situations:

  • When the front-facing camera fails to detect face and eyes.
  • When the source of the light is behind you or when using the device in the dark.
  • When the front-facing camera is already in use by another app.
  • When you are using other gestures, such as Air View™.

Smart Pause™

The Smart Pause feature uses the front-facing camera to sense when you are looking at your device, and it pauses video playback when you look away from the screen.

  1. From the Home screen, navigate to Apps > Settings.

  2. Touch the CONTROLS tab.

To switch to the tab view, touch Menu > Switch to tab view.

  3. Touch Smart screen.

  4. Mark the Smart pause checkbox to turn on the feature and touch OK.

Smart rotation may not work in the following situations:

  • When the front-facing camera fails to detect face and eyes.
  • When the source of the light is behind you or when using the device in the dark.
  • When the front-facing camera is already in use by another application.
  • When you are connected to an external video device using the AllShare® Cast Wireless Hub or an HDMI® cable.
  • When you are using other gestures, such as Air View.

Smart Pause will be unable to pause if you are using a third-party video player, a pop-up player, or Multi Window™.

Smart Alert

Smart alert is a motion gesture that will have your device vibrate when you pick it up and notifications, such as missed calls or new messages, are waiting.

  1. From the Home screen, navigate to Apps > Settings.

  2. Touch the CONTROLS tab.

To switch to the tab view, touch Menu > Switch to tab view.

  3. Touch Motions.

  4. Touch Smart alert and touch the slider to turn Smart alert on.
