After updating to Android KitKat 4.4, display keys differ with keyboard input.

Last Update Date : Apr 25. 2018

Q :
After upgrading my device to Android OS “KitKat” (Version 4.4.x), when inputting text using  an external keyboard connected to my device via Bluetooth or USB, characters displayed on screen are different  from  those I entered using the keyboard. Some keys don’t seem to respond at all. Is my device faulty?

A :
Your device is not faulty. What you are experiencing is due to the concept of operation for Android OS “KitKat”. From Android OS “KitKat” (version 4.4.x), the Google recommended keyboard layout has been applied for compatibility with other manufacturers keyboard . As a result, if you would like to connect and use an external keyboard device on your device, you will need to update the input language keyboard settings of your device.

For example, if you want to use a “Non-English” external keyboard, please change the input language from default English(US) to your language type.
To see how to change the input language settings for use with your connected keyboard, please refer the next slide.

How to change the input language:

  1. From the notification panel, tap on ‘Select keyboard layout’ when connecting external keyboard. Note: in this example we are using a device set up in the German Language (as German is a Non English input language), so the message in the notification panel says “Choose a keyboard layout” (Alternatively, you can Apps->Settings->Language and input (here shown as “Sprache und Eingabe” in step 2)

  2. Tap on Physical keyboard or “Samsung Bluetooth Keyboard”.

  3. Select the input language what you want to use by tapping on the tick box next to it to select – in this example we have selected “Deutsch” for German
