Galaxy A5(2017): How do I stop the screen from automatically rotating

Last Update Date : Apr 12. 2018

Auto Rotate

The Auto rotate feature uses an internal sensor to detect when you rotate your device, and it adjusts your screen accordingly. The feature is turned on by default and can be turned off and locked in Portrait mode by following the steps below.

Note: Screens and settings available may vary depending on your Canadian wireless service provider and your software version.

Turn Off Auto Rotate

1. To open the Quick Settings Panel, swipe from the top to the bottom of the screen, using two fingers.

2. Touch Auto rotate Auto Rotate in the Quick Settings Panel. The screen will not rotate anymore when you rotate the device, as you activated Portrait mode.

Screen Orientation and App Functionality

Some apps take advantage of the screen orientation to display more or less functions (for readability reasons). Try to rotate the screen when you use an app.

Example #1: Calculator in Portrait mode:

The best example is the Calculator app (preinstalled on your Samsung device). Basic functions are available in portrait mode.

Calculator 6

Example #2: Calculator in Landscape mode:

Scientific functions are only available in landscape mode.

Tips and Tricks: Access the scientific calculator if auto-rotate is disabled:

If Auto-rotate is disabled, turning your smartphone on its side will produce no effect. You will have to touch the Rotate Rotate icon to access the scientific calculator.

Note: If you are not sure if Auto-rotate is enabled or disabled, simply look for the Rotate Rotate icon. If the icon is present, it means that Auto-rotate is disabled on your smartphone.

Example #3: Messages in Portrait mode:

Another example is the Messages app (preinstalled on your Samsung device).

Messages 9

Example #4: Messages in Landscape mode:

You can take advantage of screen rotation to display a bigger virtual keyboard.
