Is the rear camera in my Samsung Galaxy S5 better at taking photos than the front camera?

Last Update Date : Mar 22. 2018

The front camera of the Galaxy S5 uses a 90-degree wide-angle lens. This is very useful when the camera very is close to the subject (e.g. when taking a picture of yourself.)

However, this also means that the distance between the lens and the sensor is shorter in the front camera than in normal cameras (such as the rear one). As a result, the absorption of light is subsequently lower for the front camera module and photos taken in low-light conditions may be lower in quality than in normal-light conditions. (This is particularly likely when Beauty Face mode is active.)

Minor image distortion may also occur in wide-angle photos, especially at the periphery of the image due to the properties of the lens used to take a wider screen image. It does not affect the performance of your device, just the quality of the photos taken.

For better quality of photos in low-light conditions please use the main camera located on the rear of the handset. Please also make sure the lens area is clean (use a soft dry cloth to wipe clean if the lens area is dirty, otherwise the device may not work properly in some modes that require high resolutions).

When taking a selfie in low-light conditions and in Beauty Face mode you may get better results by following the steps below.

1. Tap the Change camera button to select the front camera

1

2. When in Beauty Face mode tap on the Beauty Face mode level icon.

2

3. Touch and drag the slider to the left to reduce the effect of Beauty Face mode to compensate for the lack of light.
