Give Your Portraits
Some Love (Literally)

How to make your romantic photos (or any kind
of love photos) stand out.

Whether it’s romantic love, friendship love, family love or pet love, capturing love in photos can be tricky. It’s often tough to nail that feeling of affection without your shots veering into cliché territory or full-on cheese. So we reached out to L.A.-based photographer Tommy Lundberg (@tommylundberg) and asked him to share his tips for shooting creative, authentic, professional-looking love portraits using the Galaxy Z Flip4.

Get ready before your big date

Like a night out with a special someone, a photoshoot calls for advance planning. First, settle on your concept. Tommy wanted to capture many kinds of love, starting with a couple’s affection for each other but also movies, the desert and their fluffy cat, Gus. Next, move on to supplies. For this shoot, Tommy brought the Galaxy Z Flip4 and several props to stage a movie-date couple portrait. Finally, determine your shot list and when you’ll shoot, whether it’s daytime, nighttime, blue hour or golden hour (Tommy’s choice). Having all the details locked down will make it much easier to embrace unplanned fun and creative detours. Just like a date.

Capture the authentic moments

When you’re shooting a love portrait, Tommy says, “You want to capture those moments when people forget the camera is there—that’s when they act the most natural.” He likes to chat with his subjects beforehand and form a connection so they feel comfortable just being themselves. Shooting those candid expressions is easy with Quick Shot on the Galaxy Z Flip4, which lets you snap photos while keeping the phone closed. Tommy says, “It’s a nice way to get some off-the-cuff shots without interrupting and killing the vibe.”

See love from a new angle

Like soulmates in rom-coms, sometimes the best pro-style photography trick for you was right there the whole time. That trick? Shooting portraits from fresh, unexpected perspectives. FlexCam¹ on the Galaxy Z Flip4 is perfect for this. Just unfold the phone, rest it on a high surface and point it downward to get a bird’s eye view of, say, a couple snuggled up on the couch. Or set it on the ground, pointing up toward a four-legged friend for a pet portrait. (They’ll appreciate how majestic they look.)

Make a GIF couple portrait

The animated GIF portrait is a guaranteed social media head-turner, especially for romantic photos. For his GIF, Tommy shot the couple watching a movie that’s so exciting it makes them jump and spill their popcorn. He used flexible wire skewers to make it look like the popcorn was suspended in mid-air. Then, with the Galaxy Z Flip4’s burst shot feature, he took continuous images, moving the camera left to right around his subjects to create an energetic GIF portrait of cozy coupledom.

Customise settings for different love portraits

Outdoorsy couples on sun-drenched hiking trails will need to be photographed very differently from late-night concert-goers. The key? Being able to control your settings and match them to various subjects’ preferred locations, no matter how bright or dark they are. Luckily, it’s simple with the Galaxy Z Flip4’s Pro mode, which lets you fine-tune your ISO, shutter speed and more. Looking for something a little more casual at the moment? Portrait mode gives you preset filters that flatter your subjects right out of the gate.
