Customize the navigation bar on your Galaxy phone

The navigation bar is the menu that appears on the bottom of your screen - it's the foundation of navigating your phone. However, it isn't set in stone; you can customize the layout and button order, or even make it disappear entirely and use gestures to navigate your phone instead.

Information provided applies to devices sold in Canada. Available screens and settings may vary for smartphones sold in other countries.

The navigation bar is there to help you navigate your phone. The traditional navigation buttons are the default layout and appear at the bottom of the screen. If you want a full screen design, you can change the navigation bar's layout to Full screen gestures. With this feature, the navigation bar will disappear and you will need to swipe up to use its buttons. You can swipe up on the lines or hide them with gesture hints.

Change the navigation bar type

From Settings, search for and select Navigation bar. Tap Navigation bar again, and then choose between Navigation buttons and Full screen gestures.

To completely hide the Full screen gesture lines, make sure to turn off Gesture hints by tapping the switch. The three lines on the bottom of the screen will disappear.

You can use gestures instead of buttons to navigate your phone if that’s simpler, or if you just want to remove the buttons from your screen for a less cluttered appearance. From Settings, search for and select Navigation bar. Tap Navigation bar, and then choose Full screen gestures. Turn on Gesture hints for help on where to swipe, and turn on Show button to hide keyboard to enable the buttons when using Portrait mode.

More about full screen gestures

Tap More options at the bottom to edit the direction in which you want to swipe. Turn on Allow back gesture on keyboard, and edit the sensitivity if you’d like to use this function as well.

You can also adjust the order of the buttons on the navigation bar.

Navigation bar button order

From Settings, search for and select Navigation bar. Tap Navigation bar again. Tap Navigation buttons, and then you can choose your desired button setup at the bottom of the screen.

The navigation bar can be a mystery at times. When you want to hide the navigation bar, you can’t, but when you’re playing a game it disappears on its own. Find out why this is happening and what to do about it.

  • The hide/show icon that allowed you to hide or show the navigation bar is only available on Oreo phones. The icon was removed on the Pie OS with the navigation bar redesign.
  • While using certain third-party apps, the navigation bar may disappear even when it’s turned on. You may find this when playing a game or video. Simply swipe up to display the navigation bar temporarily.
