Unlock your Galaxy tablet with your face or fingerprints

Your Galaxy tablet uses you as its password, or more specifically, your face or fingerprints. When you use your biometrics to unlock your tablet, you can worry less about security.

Information provided applies to devices sold in Canada. Available screens and settings may vary for tablets sold in other countries.

To use face recognition, you need to set a PIN, pattern, or password first.

Your face is unique to you, which makes it one of the best security features in your arsenal. From Settings, tap Biometrics and security, and then tap Face recognition. If needed, enter your lock screen credentials; a lock screen is required to use Facial recognition. Then, follow the on-screen prompts to register your facial data.

Once your face is registered, review the security options and settings:

Turn on Face recognition
  • Remove face data: Delete the current face recognition data that is stored.
  • Add alternative look: Enhance face recognition by adding an alternative appearance.
  • Face unlock: Unlocks your tablet when your face is recognized.
  • Stay on Lock screen: Stay on the Lock screen until you swipe even if you already used Face recognition.
  • Faster recognition: Faster recognition improves speed but reduces security, increasing the possibility of a video or image being incorrectly recognized as your face.
  • Require open eyes: For added security, the tablet will only recognize your face when your eyes are open.
  • Brighten screen: Increase screen brightness temporarily so your face can be recognized in the dark.
  • Samsung Pass: Use face recognition to verify your identity with the Internet app and other supported apps.

The Galaxy Tab S7 has a fingerprint scanner on its Side key. The in-screen fingerprint scanner is only available on the Tab S5e and the Tab S6. The Tab S4 does not have a fingerprint scanner, whereas the Tab S3 and Tab S2 have a fingerprint scanner on their Home key.

From Settings, tap Biometrics and security, and then tap Fingerprints. If needed, enter your lock screen credentials; a lock screen is required to use Fingerprint unlock. Follow the on-screen prompts to register your finger, and then tap Done.

Set up fingerprints

Now you can unlock your tablet by simply placing the registered finger on the in-screen sensor, which is located right above the Home button.

Once your fingerprint data is registered, review the security options and settings:

  • Rename a fingerprint: Tap the desired fingerprint, enter the new name, and then tap Save.
  • Remove fingerprint data: Tap your desired fingerprint, and then tap Remove.
  • Add fingerprint: Add additional fingerprints to your tablet.
  • Check added fingerprints: Test your registered fingerprints to see if the tablet recognizes them.
  • Fingerprint unlock: Unlocks your tablet when your fingerprint is recognized.
  • Show an icon when screen if off: Choose when a fingerprint icon appears on your screen. You can choose between Always on DisplayTap to show, and Never.
  • Samsung Pass: Use fingerprint recognition to verify your identity with the Internet app and other supported apps.
  • Samsung Pay: Use your fingerprints to make payments quickly and securely.

This feature is only available on the Galaxy Tab S4. It also requires a lock screen to be set up.

They say eyes are the window to your soul. Well, they can also be the security code for your tablet! Because with Iris scan, your irises can unlock the tablet's screen. From Settings, tap Biometric and security, and then tap Irises. If needed, enter your lock screen credentials; a lock screen is required to use Iris unlock. Tap Continue, and then tap Continue one more time.

Activate the Iris scanner

From there, follow the on-screen instructions to register your irises. If you wear glasses, you may need to remove them to get the best results. When it's done, make sure the switch next to Iris unlock is turned on. Your tablet will automatically unlock whenever it detects and scans your irises.

Here are the different settings you can adjust for iris recognition:

  • Remove iris data: Remove your registered iris data.
  • Preview screen mask: Choose what screen mask appears when you use Iris unlock.
  • Iris unlock: Unlocks your tablet when your irises are recognized.
  • Screen-on iris recognition: Unlock your tablet with your irises as soon as the screen turns on, without swiping first.
  • Stay on Lock screen: When you unlock with iris recognition, stay on the Lock screen until you swipe.
  • Samsung Pass: Use iris recognition to verify your identity with the Internet app and other supported apps.
  • Samsung Pay: Use your irises to make payments quickly and securely.
