SAMSUNG SDS Strengthens Location-Based Services

Samsung SDS is launching LBS (location-based services), which provides various mobile Internet services with location information. The LBS has been recognized as a new revenue generator in the wireless Internet service industry.

Samsung SDS (CEO Hong-Ki Kim) has established a joint venture focused on location tracking solutions in 2000 with Centrex, a location tracking solutions company in Canada.

Following the joint venture with Centrex, Samsung SDS announced on May 30 it signed an agreement with Pointi.com (www.pointi.com) for equity investment, and joint development of solutions and marketing.

Pointi.com is a wire/wireless LBS solutions and location-based application technology company, and it was the first Korean company to have developed LBS platform and LBS application system.

Samsung SDS would secure location-based services solutions that can be used to provide various services in addition to the location tracking technology. As such, Samsung SDS is expected to secure a strategic place in the location-based services industry, which will likely see tremendous growth in demand as IMT-2000 mobile services is introduced.

The LBS industry is forecasted to show tremendous growth and become the "killer application" in the next generation mobile Internet services, as it is able to provide diverse services in multimedia format in traffic, logistics, wireless e-commerce and other areas in line with the increasing complexity of mobile telecommunications system with the introduction of IMT-2000 and ITS (Intelligent Transport System).
Furthermore, explosive demand for LBS is expected, as domestic IMT-2000 service providers are pursuing to integrate LBS into their systems from the initial stage of network construction.

With the strategic relationship with Pointi.com, Samsung SDS will first apply the LBS solutions to its various GIS (Geographic Information System) projects in order to strengthen its web-based GIS operations.

In addition, the two companies are planning to secure the first mover advantage in the domestic LBS market. Plans include expanding services from mobile telecommunications network operators to public service agencies such as fire stations and the police as well as clients in application industries such as logistics and information service providers with services ranging from the construction of LBS platform and application system to maintenance and services.

On the other hand, Samsung SDS plans to strengthen its position in the location information sector by integrating its experiences from various off-line GIS SI projects with experiences from on-line services such as SDSGIS (www.sds.co.kr), a web-based GIS solutions developer, and MLogis (www.mlogis.com), an import/export ASP (Application Service Provider) community with its base in location information services.

Samsung SDS also plans to expand its market by entering mobile Internet industry as well as with strengthened partnerships with domestic and foreign companies to secure basic solutions technology such as the strategic partnership with Pointi.com and a joint venture last year with Canada's Centrex to establish Unitrack (www.unitrack.co.kr), a location tracking solutions developer.
