SAMSUNG Electronics Goes after US Digital Appliance Retail Market

SEOUL, Korea # July 23, 2001 # Samsung Electronics has completed its first shipment of digital appliances to CompUSA, which operates 220 large outlets nationwide. The largest computer retailer in the United States has selected Samsung to supply it with TFT-LCD monitors, digital TVs, DVD players, digital camcorders and MP3 players.

Sales counters handling only Samsung products are being installed in the center of the CompUSA stores, helping to boost the Samsung brand image as well as sales volume. This is the first time that Samsung has managed to chosen ahead of Japanese brands by CompUSA, testimony to the improved marketability of Samsung products in the digital era.

CompUSA, with US$5.5 billion in annual sales, is the fourth major US retailer supplied by Samsung. Samsung products are already sold at Best Buy (US$13 billion in annual sales), Circuit City (US$9.6 billion in annual sales) and Sears (US$6 billion in annual sales).

High-end digital products will occupy a greater portion of the Samsung product sales at large US retailers. Company officials expect digital products to make up 44% of all appliances sold, while at least 50% of all monitors sold will be TFT-LCD models.
To make this happen, Samsung has formed special organizational units to work at each of the large stores in the US. These units will carefully manage operations to achieve “market-driven change” for creating new markets.

Samsung Electronics Digital Media President Daeje Chin joined CompUSA President Harold F. Compton for a massive opening ceremony for the exclusive Samsung sales counter at the CompUSA Dadeland store, in Miami. At the event, President Chin said, “Our supplying digital appliances to four major US retailers, including CompUSA, proves that these products are reliable. We expect this will help to elevate our brand image and increase our sales in the North American market.”
