SAMSUNG Smart Card Competence Center Opens in France

SEOUL, Korea July 19, 2001 The Samsung Smart Card Competence Center (French title - Centre d'affaires la Boursidiere) was newly opened in Paris recently in a move to meet demands of the local customers in the rapidly expanding Smart Card chip business in Europe.

The Samsung Smart Card Competence Center will pave the way for Samsung's penetration of the European market. Samsung will provide real-time technical support for local customers and plan products appropriate for European market. In addition the Center will enable the company to strengthen its marketing strategies through market analysis and customer services.

The Smart Card chip is a key component for next-generation e-commerce. Applications range from general identification purposes such as health insurance cards, electronic ID cards and e-cash to specific markets such as the Subscriber Identification Module (SIM), which is a Smart Card IC used in to mobile e-commerce.

Samsung's SIM(Subscriber Identification Module) card technology and process has shown notable growth in the past couple of years. The worldwide SIM(Subscriber Identification Module) card market forecast shows annual growth of 40% through 2002. Samsung Electronics has already developed the world's most sophisticated technology for Smart Cards. And the company is aiming to attain remarkable market share of the SIM(Subscriber Identification Module) card market in the next couple of years.

Terminology

Subscriber Identification Module:
SIM is a type of Smart Card used with GSM. The SIM card can be programmed to store the user's ID and account information, and can be inserted into the GSM handset to send and receive these data (as part of e-commerce transactions). The billing is made out in the name of the SIM cardholder.
