New SAMSUNG Products Put the Office in the Palm of Your Hand: Wireless Phones Are the First CDMA Units to Offer Computer, Office and Internet Access, and More!

LAS VEGAS, USA - January 8, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., (SEC) today announced the revolution of the mobile office with the introduction of the SCS-100/200, the first CDMA 1900 family of dual mode smart phones to combine the capabilities of a wireless phone and palmtop computer.
Even before its debut, the breakthrough nature of the SCS-100/200 family of prod ucts was recognized when it received the Innovations '98 International award in the mobile electronics/mobile office category. These awards are endorsed by the Industrial Designers Society of America and sponsored and produced by Consumer Electronics Manufacturers Association (CEMA) and are considered the most prestigious honor in consumer electronics.

Addressing the need of both cellular and PCS, the SCS-100 was developed for cellular users while the SCS-200 meets the needs of PCS customers. Both products offer data transmission and word processing (including a spreadsheet); access to a wide range of information such as faxes, e-mail, short messages and the Internet; as well as organizational aids including an electronic calendar, address book, notepad, calculator, and personal organizer. The new SCS-100/200 handsets, which launched just one year after Samsung Telecommunications America (STA) began operating in the U.S., serve as an all-in-one communications device.

"The SCS-100/200 family of products represents the way we will approach the industry -- aggressive, innovative and always pushing the limits," said Pete Skarzynski, STA's vice president of Wireless Sales and Marketing. "Both the industry and consumers can expect more of this type of breakthrough technology from Samsung Electronics."

The SCS-100/200 products, which are being introduced at CES '98, are expected to be available mid-year in the US.

The SCS-100/200 products, which use Windows CE 2.0 as their operating system, function as a desktop and provide access to pocket versions of Word for Windows, Excel, and Internet Explorer.

The SCS-100/200's standard battery allows users two hours of talk time and up to 40 hours of standby time.

Features of the handsets include Short Messaging Service (SMS), Circuit Data Service, Packet Data Service and Character Enter Method, which include On Screen Keyboard and Handwriting Recognition. The units have a two-line, 16-character-per-line display, plus two lines of icons. Optional accessories for the SCS-100/200 products include cigarette lighter charger, travel charger, wired fax/data modem adapter, wired keyboard, and a hands-free car kit.
