SAMSUNG SDS makes large volume export of multi-functional IC cards to Japan

Samsung SDS is exporting large number of medical IC cards to Japan. Samsung SDS (www.sds.samsung.co.kr) announced on September 16 that it signed an agreement worth 6 billion Won with a large Japanese medical supplier, Kasamatsumeiki (CEO: Kamaskatsu Yutaka), to export the systems and 1 million IC cards over 1 year.

The medical IC cards Samsung will provide the Japanese company is of the same specifications as the IC cards with 8bit CPU distributed in Korea for use as electronic cash cards. The cards are highly sophisticated smart cards with high level of security and large processing capacity to accommodate electronic medical insurance card functions in future.

To win the contract Samsung SDS has successfully completed a pilot project with some 6,000 cards for ophthalmology clinics in Yaoyama district of Kanazawa City begun in June. Along with Samsung SDS, INI, a smart card manufacturing specialist in Korea, and FEC, to whom Samsung SDS exported IC cards for logistics in May, participated in the pilot project. A final approval of the system's and the cards' security and stability resulted in the contract, which will make the medical IC cards available through out Japan.

In particular, Kasamatsumeiki is the largest medical supplier in Japan, where distribution districts are divided into 14 different regions, and for a domestic firm, this contract is the largest export of highly sophisticated smart cards to Japan. Samsung SDS plans to increase the number of cards exported to more than 2 million per year and expand its business to electronic medical insurance card based on the marketing opportunities forged with Kasamatsumeiki.
