SAMSUNG Networks Division Launches ATM Switching Platform

(DALLAS - November 4, 1997)
Samsung Telecommunications America's (STA) Networks division today announced the debut of STARacer, a high-capacity, multi-service network switching platform that offers integrated data communications and telecommunications services based on ATM technology.
"For mission-critical applications, network performance and reliability are an absolute necessity," said Mark Stubbe, vice president, Networks division. "STARacer fulfills the promise of broadband switching by providing network operators with scaleable, flexible solutions that will simplify their network and enable new services and revenues."

STARacer allows organizations to migrate from TDM and frame relay to ATM on a single platform while complementing existing investments in routers and frame-relay switches. It can be deployed as an edge switch for larger carriers or as the core of smaller carriers and corporate WANs. STARacer is a carrier-class fault-tolerant switch that supports switched and permanent virtual channels, dynamic routing, and comprehensive network management. In addition to low- and high-speed ATM access, the switch facilitates frame relay and circuit emulation services at T1/E1 and T3/E3 speeds. Enhanced traffic management features and sophisticated connection priority and preemption techniques combine to ensure low transport latencies and exceptional throughput.

STARacer is the result of Samsung's decades of networking experience as the leading supplier of WAN equipment in Korea. STA recently debuted its Networks division to service both the public networks and enterprise networks markets. Its enterprise focus is on ethernet and ATM-based workgroup solutions. Samsung's LAN product line includes NICS, hubs, and switches. The company conducts ongoing research for both WAN and LAN products at its two U.S.-based research and development labs; the Broadband Network Lab located in Dallas, which developed the STARacer product, and the Computer Network Lab btased in Boston.

STA, a Dallas-based subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Company, researches, develops, and markets telecommunications and data communications systems within the United States. Other than the Networks division, STA has four main business units: Wireless Systems, Wireless Terminals, Business Communications, and Office Automation.

Samsung Electronics Company, a $19 billion flagship company of the Samsung Group, has been providing state-of-the-art communication solutions since 1984. The Samsung Group is the 14th largest company in the world, with revenues in excess of $90 billion.
