SAMSUNG SDS, to advance CPC consulting market

SEOUL, Korea October 18, 2001 Samsung Electronics is expanding its involvement in multi-chip package (MCP) devices for such portable products as mobile phones, PDAs and digital cameras. The rapid spread of handheld information products is driving the market for MCP devices, and the company has revealed their intentions to aggressively respond to this demand.

Samsung's stated goal is to be the world leader in MCP devices by 2005, and the company expects to offer a lineup of 15 different products by the end of this year. Marketing efforts are already being stepped up on the six MCP products that Samsung Electronics already has available.

The MCP device consists of different chips into stacks of two or more and then packaged together. When two chips are so packaged, their surface area is reduced by an average of 40%.

MCP devices currently command 15-20% higher prices then when the components are packaged separately. Their application is rapidly increasing as manufacturers strive to make their hand-held products smaller, thinner and lighter.

Samsung Electronics already has completed development of three MCP devices (NOR flash memory + SRAM, UtRAM + NAND flash memory, and UtRAM + low-power SRAM). Using these MCP device basis, Samsung Electronics will concentrate on marketing in the 2G / 2.5G / 3G mobile phone market.

Samsung's MCP devices completed so far are just 1.2mm thick, about 15% thinner than competing products. In the future, the company aims to stack three chips into a package of 1.2mm thick.

Samsung Electronics aims to grab more than 40% share of the MCP market by 2005.
