SAMSUNG Electronics Develops 0.13um process technology for SOC Devices

SEOUL, Korea - December 13, 2001 - In November, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. completed development of 0.13-micron logic process technology, a key to fabricating next-generation high-speed semiconductor devices. The company has now announced plans to apply this technology to the mass production of next generation SOC (System On Chips) devices.

Samsung Electronics applies the copper interconnection technology to its new 0.13-micron logic process technology. The high performance and low power consuming SOC devices find preference in copper as a base material, since it is lower in resistance and heat emission than the conventional aluminum. The new technology enhances performance as well as cost competitiveness against the previous 0.18-micron technology on aluminum interconnects. Chip size is reduced over 50%, operating frequency doubles at a maximum and power consumption is reduced 33% compared to 0.18-micron technology.

Moreover, Samsung Electronics also has 0.13-micron aluminum interconnection technology allowing variable application to SOC designs meeting market demands. The company's world smallest SRAM cell size adds to the customer's advantage of enjoying compact devices.

Samsung Electronics has developed 3 process technologies to satisfy demands of variable SOC designs.

Generic process to apply as a common design on overall SOC devices, high speed process for CPU and network devices, and low power consumption process for SOC devices for mobile applications such as mobile handsets and PDAs.

Samsung Electronics will apply the new 0.13-micron process technology to mass production of high performance microprocessors and 20 or more next generation SOC devices in early 2002. The company expects annual sales of these products to reach about US$1 billion by 2005.

Samsung Electronics will also integrate this new technology with DRAM and flash memory processes to ensure the competitiveness of next-generation SOC devices.
