SAMSUNG Electronics Comes Out with 19inch TFT-LCD for Desktop Monitors

SEOUL, Korea - February 21, 2002 - Samsung Electronics has gone into mass production of a 19-inch TFT-LCD with vastly improved picture quality, and is targeting the new product at financing applications and in high-end desktop LCD monitors. The 19-inch SXGA display has 1,280 pixels across by 1,024 rows high, providing the same resolution as high-end 17-inch models. The aspect ratio is 5:4.
Samsung has also applied its proprietary Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) technology to achieve a 500:1 contrast ratio, 170˚ viewing angle (left, right, above, below) and 250-cd/m2 brightness.

The characters and letters appear larger on a 19-inch TFT-LCD with SXGA resolution displays than they do on smaller models, which means greater ease of use. The size of the outer frame is actually smaller than that found on 18.1-inch models, so a line of several monitors made with this 19" TFT-LCD can fit in a small space. This feature is well suited for applications at financial institutions such as banks.

Samsung Electronics plans to develop its 19-inch TFT-LCD into a "strategic product."
In 1997, Samsung became the first in the industry to come out with a 17-inch TFT-LCD, and every effort was subsequently made to expand its marketability as a "strategic product."
The 17-inch TFT-LCD succeeded the 15-inch model as the main item used in the LCD monitor market, and Samsung Electronics holds a market share of at least 60% for the 17-inch TFT-LCDs.

Firmly positioned in the 17-inch TFT-LCD market, Samsung Electronics now presents the 19-inch model as the next-generation market standard, a maximum choice in both size and affordability. The popularity of both 15-inch to 17-inch LCD monitors is spreading steadily.
The 18.1-inch version has limited application in the financial industry, while the models of 20-inch and larger are still too expensive to represent a large market.

Nine of the 19-inch TFT-LCDs can be made from a single substrate on Samsung's fifth-generation production line, a facility that all major players are scrambling to acquire. Thus, Samsung's 19-inch model can compete well with the 18.1-inch version in terms of productivity and price.
Moreover, the excellent viewing area and picture quality are expected to drive demand.

Now, Samsung Electronics is adding a 19-inch model to its TFT-LCD lineup that already includes 15-inch, 17-inch and 21.3-inch versions. The company aims to sell 200,000 of the 19-inch TFT-LCDs this year and to raise that figure to 500,000 units in 2003.

The LCD monitor market experienced sharp price drops last year, but market volume has continued to at least double every year. In 2002, the market is forecast to reach 27 million units, an 80% increase year on year. The 15-inch models will make up around 70% of this total, but demand for 17-inch models has been growing fast recently, and this segment is expected to represent 20% of total demand in 2002.
