SAMSUNG Products Contend for iF Design Awards at CeBIT 2003

Hanover, 13 March, 2003 ? Samsung Electronics has today been recognised for its excellence in design. Four of its leading products have been selected for this year’s iF Design Awards, sponsored by Germany’s Industrie Forum Design. This accolade is a tribute to the commitment made by Samsung to produce designs that are truly innovative and functional.

The four award-winning Samsung products are the PDA phone SPH-i330, the 15-inch TFT-LCD monitor 152T, the 50-inch PDP Home Theatre System and the Digital Camcorder VP-D590i. Each product typifies the company’s philosophy ? providing advanced technology, cutting-edge design and desirable products in the digital era.

The iF Design Awards, which were established in 1953, are sponsored by Industrie Forum Design Hanover of Germany. They are among the world’s most prestigious design awards, along with the Innovation Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) of the US. The products are shown the year following their selection at CeBIT and Hanover Fair.

1. Product eligibility:
Products that have been on the market for three years of less, or products that are scheduled for market launch (concept products included)

2. Fields covered:
The Awards are made in 15 different categories, including Office/Business, Communication, Home, Household and Consumer Electronics

3. Main judging criteria:
Design quality, material suitability, innovation, environmental friendliness, functions/user friendliness, aesthetics, safety/durability

PDA phone (SPH-i330)
Designer: Wireless Design Team, headed by Lee Young-geun
Design concepts:
.Mobile phone and PDA combination terminal with wireless Internet access, Palm OS, Personal Information Management, and games
.The sleek new form with rudders on the side help to facilitate holding and operating the unit with one hand

15-inch TFT-LCD monitor (SyncMaster 152T)
Designer: Kim Eui-shik of Image Display Team, headed by Choi Seung-myung
Design concepts:
.Minimal and simple design
.Two hinges are attached to provide viewing angles of 160o horizontally and 150o vertically; display height and angle can be adjusted to suit individual users; the foldable unit reduces logistics costs

50-inch PDP/Home Theatre System (SPD 50PNS/HTS-2100)
Designer: Image Display Team, headed by Sung Chang-kyung and Yang Joon-ho
Design concepts:
.Simple and aesthetic design. Lack of a fan creates a quiet operation
.Separating the screen from the PDP provides a sunscreen effect
.Hidden control buttons and a glossy finish provide a luxurious touch
.Stands are height adjustable and revolve for greater ease of use

Digital Camcorder (VP-D590i)
Designer: Im Hyun-taek of the DVS Team, headed by Byun Won-gap
Design concepts:
.Ultra-mini digital camcorder designed for ease of use; targets consumers from 20-30 years and includes the world’s smallest MiniDV
.Magnesium alloy parts make the unit lightweight and fully portable
.Sharp lines and strong two-tone coloring help to emphasize the compactness and sturdiness of the product.

A total of 27 Samsung products have been honored over the last five years, including 11 selections in 2001.
