Major Boost to SAMSUNG Electronics' Digital TV Business

Seoul, South Korea - January, 7, 1999 - commercial digital broadcasting made its US debut last November, and now a full-fledged market for digital TVs is beginning to form in the US. Samsung Electronics, which currently enjoys the greatest competitive advantage in the digital TV business, is now strengthening operations to establish a dominant market position from early on.

The company has just completed development of a 65" model and plans to begin exports in the first half of this year.

Samsung Electronics will display the new wide-screen digital TV at the Winter Consumer Electronics Show, which is being held in Las Vegas January 7-10. The company expects the product to receive a lot of attention from consumers and dealers alike.

This, the world's largest show for consumer electronics products, is known as a showcase for the latest information appliances, to include digital products. Samsung Electronics will full take advantage of this opportunity to market its digital TVs and negotiate export deals with local buyers.

Samsung Electronics has designed its latest model to be compatible with all eighteen formats, including high definition and standard definition. The larger the screen becomes, the wider the gaps between the 1,080 scanning lines become, causing a steady decline in definition. Therefore, Samsung Electronics has adopted a 9" high-definition projector for its new product. Other features include a GUI environment with mouse control, automatic channel search, program information function, and "V" chip.

Samsung Electronics plans to have its 65" model on the market in the second quarter of this year, when it will be sold along with Samsung's 55" model digital TV.
