Andriy Shevchenko, Robert Marek Korzeniowski, Marco Columbro, Andrea and Dino Meneghin Ready to Run with the Olympic Torch in Milano on behalf of SAMSUNG Electronics

January 27th, 2006 (Milano, Italy) - On January 29th, the 51st day of its historic journey, the Olympic Flame arrives in Milano. Presenting Partner Samsung welcomes celebrity torchbearers including soccer star Andriy Shevchenko, four-time Olympic gold medalist Robert Marek Korzeniowski from Poland, TV showman Marco Columbro, basketball players Andrea and Dino Meneghin. In addition, Samsung is giving a group of citizens with inspiring stories from Hungary, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, Greece and Italy the chance to participate in the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay by carrying the Flame.



The Relay, which lasts 64 days, began in Rome on December 8th, 2005 and culminates on February 10th, 2006 in Torino at the Opening Ceremony of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Ten thousand and one torchbearers will carry the Flame 11,300 kilometers through the scenic towns and historic sites in every region of Italy.



The Olympic Torch Relay presents a unique opportunity for fans to witness the most prestigious sporting symbol, the Olympic Flame, up close and in person. For Torino 2006, Samsung is providing more than 1,900 people from around the world a once-in-a-lifetime experience to run with the Flame. The company selected world-class athletes, celebrities and inspiring individuals, who embody the Olympic spirit, from thousands of sport fans who applied to various selection promotions from all over the world.



Milano, the “never sleeping city”, is ready to welcome the Olympic Torch. Torchbearers will run along historical streets and admire monuments like the Teatro alla Scala, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele and the Duomo. Among celebrities to run Samsung invited Andriy Shevchenko, famous soccer champion and winner of the “Golden Ball” award in 2004. Other athlete torchbearers include Andrea and Dino Meneghin. The father and son basketball stars will pass the Flame to each other as a symbol of the continuum of sport passion over the time. Dino Meneghin enjoyed a long and winning sport career, which included appearances at four Olympic Games, 13 finals in the Champions League and seven victories in the Italian League. Robert Marek Korzeniowski is also invited to run with the torch in Milano from Poland. He won four gold medals at the 1996, 2000 and 2004 Olympic Summer Games, while also becoming the first athlete to claim both the long distance and short distance crowns. Samsung Electronics also invited Marco Columbro, the popular TV showman and theatre actor, to run in Milano.



On January 30th, while the Olympic Torch Relay will arrive in Cernusco sul Naviglio, the convoy will make a stop at the headquarters of Samsung Electronics Italia, where a celebration held by the mayor Daniele Cassamagnaghi and Doo Young Yoo, President of Samsung Electronics Italia will welcome the Flame to deliver the Olympic spirit to the community. Among the seven torchbearers of Cernusco running into the city, there will be Simone Collio, athlete of “Fiamma Gialle” who holds the Italian record in the 100m indoor competition.



Alberto Tomba, Samsung’s Global Athlete Ambassador, said “I want to congratulate all of the torchbearers and spectators on being part of a historic moment for our beautiful country.” He added, “Thanks to the people of Milano for preparing a wonderful event. I believe that people of this wonderful city will welcome with passion the Flame and all torchbearers. We’re getting close to the start of the Torino Games and you can feel the excitement increasing every day”.



In Milano, Samsung will help generate enthusiasm for the Torch Relay by participating in a city celebration organized by the Torino 2006 Organizing Committee (TOROC). There will be high-tech caravans, interactive activities at the Samsung igloo and opportunities for the public to experience the official Olympic Games phones for Torino 2006. After already traveling through nearly every region of Italy, the Torch will visit Valle d’Aosta and Piemonte. In just a few days, on January 26th, the Flame will arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo where there will be a celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of 1956 Olympic Winter Games.

Other notable Samsung torchbearers have included: the Austrian “Ski Emperor” and Olympic gold medalist Franz Klammer and fashion designer Lavinia Biagiotti, who ran in Rome, former Formula 1 driver Alessandro Nannini, who ran in his hometown of Siena, New York City baseball manager Joe Torre and actor Brandon Routh who will play Superman in the upcoming Hollywood film, who ran in Florence, and comedian Fabrizio Fontana, TV showman Fabio Canino, and Olympic figure skating medalist Lu Chen, who ran in Venice.



For the first time, Samsung is also providing Torch Relay organizers with thousands of official Olympic Games phones, which features the state-of-the-art mobile information service, Wireless Olympic Works (WOW), which supplies up-to-the-minute information and group messaging capabilities to help manage the Relay. The route information, information about torchbearers, highlight videos and photos of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay will be served through WOW service. For Torino 2006, the official Olympic Games phone is the SGH-D600, Samsung’s latest flagship handset. The SGH-D600 is an upgraded version of the hugely popular D500 series, the winner of several prestigious awards including the Best Mobile Handset 2005 for excellence in handset design and innovation by the GSMA, the global trade association for the world's Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) operator community.
