Samsung Develops 128MB SmartMedia Card

SEOUL, Korea - September 27, 2000 – Samsung Electronics has become the world’s first to develop a 128MB SmartMedia card—next generation flash memory-based memory cards for portable products. This digital storage medium can store up to 560 high-resolution (1200 x 1024) still photographs or 32 CD-quality songs.

The new SmartMedia uses NAND flash memory, based on 0.18-micron design rule, in an advanced package technology. SmartMedia cards up to now contained up to two chips, but this new SmartMedia card comes with four 256Mb chips thanks to the latest 0.18-micron technology, the utilization of mirror die and the optimization of PCB layout. The new design allows 128MB SmartMedia cards to be introduced to the market a full year earlier.

According to IDC2000, the SmartMedia card was more popular than any other type of memory card in the market in 1999: 8.5 million units reaching close to 50% of all types of Flash memory cards.
Third generation mobile phones that offer audio and video applications will be another driver for high capacity flash memory and flash memory cards such as SmartMedia. Samsung Electronics is now in a leading position to satisfy the exploding demand of Flash memory.

Flash memory is available in two types: NOR for storing program codes and NAND for storing data. Samsung is a major supplier of NAND flash memory semiconductor chips. According to Semico Research 2000, the Flash memory market for data storage is estimated at US$1.3 billion this year and is forecast to grow 56% a year, soaring to US$7.6 billion by 2004.

Samsung Electronics is scheduled to mass-produce its 128MB SmartMedia cards early next year. Company officials predict that the revenue of NAND Flash memory will reach more than $1 billion in 2002.
