SAMSUNG Awarded $18 Million Contract for CDPD Smart Phones from AT&T Wireless Services

RICHARDSON, Texas -- June 23, 1997 -- Samsung Telecommunications America Inc. announced today a one-year renewable contract worth more than $18 million to supply AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division, with Samsung's cellular digital packet data (CDPD) Duett*' smart phone. The smart phone combines analog and CDPD technology to offer subscribers access to public and private networks in addition to the convenience of traditional cellular communications.

Samsung's slim, nine-ounce Duett* contains an Internet browser that enables subscribers to send and receive e-mail, as well as call up web-based information like weather reports and stock prices on a three-line LCD screen. It also can be used as a wireless modem. Initial deliveries of co-branded (AT&T Wireless and Samsung) smart phones to AT&T are scheduled for July. The phones will be offered as part of AT&T's PocketNet service starting later this summer.

"Samsung's Duett*, equipped with AT&T's PocketNet service will be the perfect companion for people on the go and mobile professionals who can't afford to have downtime," said Jeong Han Kim, president, Samsung Telecommunications America.

"The smallest and lightest smart phone on the market, Samsung's Duett* is a result of our investment in improving the way people work and live through telecommunications. This commitment is found in Samsung's $640 million investment in telecommunications equipment, facilities and R&D in 1997 and our plans to invest an additional $4.5 billion over the next seven years."

"The Samsung Duett*'s state-of-the-art technology and design create the perfect companion for PocketNet service," said Kendra VanderMeulen, vice president and general manager, Wireless Data Division, AT&T Wireless Services.
