SAMSUNG Enters COLUMBIA Swiching System Market

Columbia, October 3,1997, Samsung and ETELL (Empresa Telecommunications del Llano S.A.) Co., Ltd.

inaugurated a 14,500-line digital switching system in Villavicencio, Columbia.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. entered the Columbian switching system market, a Latin American market with infinite potential. Samsung provided an SDX-100 digital switching system, 4 RASM systems (Remote Access Subscriber Machine), transmission equipment, generators and other equipment on a full turn-key basis to ETELL Co., Ltd. For the next step business with ETELL Samsung already presented the proposal and is waiting for the evaluation from it.

Columbia currently has only a 13% popularization rate for communications networks. Therefore, since only the communications networks near urban areas are developed privately, the Columbian government is establishing communications infrastructure in rural areas.

Through the Columbian market, Samsung is strategically placed to enter Columbia's field businesses in the near future. These field businesses are expansions of communications service operators and of urban communications networks. Samsung, recognized worldwide for its product quality in the area of switching systems, has already entered other Latin America markets such as Chile, Ecuador and Nicaragua. In the Columbian market in particular, world-famous communications operators such as AT&T, Ericsson, and Alcatel are currently competing.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US$19-billion flagship company of the Korean-based Samsung Group, intends to be one of the world's top five manufacturers of multimedia telecommunications products by the year 2005. The company focuses on digital telecom products and, by the year 2000, aims tot be ranked among the top-three handset manufacturers by exporting over US$1 bn CDMA handsets. In an effort to improve the company's brand image, Samsung Electronics signed on as one of The Olympic Partner (TOP) companies on May 9, 1997, to provide wireless communications for the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics and the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.
