Samsung Galaxy S™ II Software Update for T-Mobile
A software update, T989UVLH1, is available for the Samsung Galaxy S™ II (SGH-T989) from T-Mobile. This update is only available through Samsung Kies.
This update was designed to apply an update to the operating system of the device while leaving certain types of user data intact, including pictures, videos, and contacts. Certain settings, such as wallpaper and ringtone assignments, may be reset back to factory default. To be safe, it is best practice to always back up all data and assume that everything will be lost. Your SIM card and any external microSD™ memory card may remain installed during this update. You may remove either or both prior to beginning the process, if desired. Remember to re-install both after the update process has completed.
This FAQ will walk you through the following scenarios to ensure a successful upgrade:
- Backing up personal data from your device to Kies (link above)
- Downloading and/or updating Kies (if necessary)
- Downloading and installing the device software package from Samsung servers
Check Current Software Version
- From any home screen touch Menu > Settings > About Phone.
- The Baseband version show the current software version on your mobile device. The current version should be either T989UVLE1 or T989UVLDE. The new Baseband version will beT989UVLH1.

Get Kies Software
This update is available through Windows and Mac computers using the Samsung Kies software application only. This update will not be made available over-the-air. Click the button below to go to the Samsung Kies page.
After you download Kies for your platform, switch back to this article and follow the steps below.
Launching and Auto-Updating Kies
After the download is complete, launch the installer and allow Kies to install on your system. If you are prompted to reboot the system, do so before proceeding.
Once Kies is up and running, you may see an update prompt. Click Update to allow Kies to update itself to the latest version available. Read and accept the License Agreement by populating the I Agree check box and clicking Next.
Kies will begin downloading component files. This will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection. Once Kies has completed its update process it will close and relaunch itself. You are now ready to update your Galaxy S™ II.
Update My Galaxy S™ II
- Connect your device to your PC or laptop using the supplied USB cable.
- Ensure that Kies recognizes your device by looking in the upper section of the left-bar navigation menu.
- Once Kies recognizes the device you will see a pop-up similar to the one below.
Firmware versions shown will vary.
- Click Update.
- Read through the Caution pop-up and, if you agree, click to populate the I have read all of the above information checkbox.
- Read the Allow saving of information statement and select Allow saving or Proceed without saving and then click Start upgrade.
- Kies will begin downloading firmware upgrade components from Samsung servers. This will take a few minutes depending on the speed of your Internet connection
- After a few minutes, Kies will then begin transferring the firmware binary to the device. Do not disconnect the cable connected to the PC.
- As your device is updating, please do not disconnect the cable connected to the PC
- When the update process has completed, click OK.
